BLOCK IV
We DON’T USE Present Continuous with stative verbs. Stative verbs describe a
state (physical, emotional, mental), condition or perception.
Compare:
Stative (or state) verb
I believe in love …
Permanent state of mind, can’t be
stopped or started momentarily

Active (or action, dynamic) verb
and I am looking for my soul mate.
Actions taken, controlled easily at every
moment.
и ищу свою половинку.
Most stative verbs are:
1. Emotions, wishes, feelings.
Love-hate, want, need, hope, prefer, etc.
2. Senses.
See, hear, smell, etc.
3. Mental state, thoughts, perceptions.
Believe, understand, realize, know, agree, mean, remember, doubt, etc.
4. Possession.
Possess, have, belong, own, cost, etc.
! The rule is not used when the verb loses its stative meaning in a collocation or
context.
Compare:
Stative meaning
I have a nice house (=possess)
I see people around (= see with eyes)
I think you’re right (= opinion) .
Active meaning
I am having a lunch (= eat)
I am seeing my doctor tomorrow (= visit)
I am thinking over the task (= brain activity)

BLOCK I
(Singular) was

An action in progress at a particular time in the past.
I was still sleeping at 7 a.m. yesterday. – Вчера в 7 часов утра я все еще
спал.

Past Simple Past Continuous
I cooked my dinner myself. I was cooking my dinner and watching TV.
Я (что сделал?) приготовил ужин сам. Я (что делал?) готовил ужин и смотрел ТВ.

For questions use WAS/WERE + Subject + V-ing
- We were dancing all night long. – Мы танцевали всю ночь напролет.
- Were you dancing? - А ты танцевал?
For negatives use WAS/WERE + NOT + V-ing
- No, I wasn’t. I was not dancing with anybody. I am too shy.
- Нет. Я ни с чем не танцевал. Я слишком застенчив.
We also use Past Continuous to talk about an unfinished activity interrupted
by an event.
While I was having a bath the doorbell rang. – В то время, как я принимал
ванну, зазвенел дверной звонок.
What were you doing when the accident happened? – Что вы делали, когда
произошел несчастный случай?
was + not = wasn’t
were + not = weren’t
while = Past Continuous
when = Past Simple

BLOCK I
will be + V-ing
An action in progress at a particular time in the future.
I will be sitting on a beach this time tomorrow! – Завтра в это время я уже
буду сидеть на пляже!

Future Continuous
I will be sitting in the centre,
you will find me easily.
Я буду сидеть в центре, ты меня

Future Simple
I will sit here, if you don’t mind.
