Unit 1 Design Jobs
Design jobs
Generally speaking, design is the process of envisioning and planning the creation of objects, interactive systems, buildings, vehicles, etc. It is user-centered, i.e. users are at the heart of the design thinking approach. It is about creating solutions for people, physical items or more abstract systems to address a need or a problem.
It is a very broad concept and its meaning can greatly vary from one field to another. It permeates many aspects of our lives and branches out into many different subgenres, from product design, sound, virtual reality, interaction, to designing cars, video games, software interfaces, the home and offices interior etc.
The design originated in ancient times, when people first started to face the question of convenience of the instruments of labor and everyday life.
The designers typically have the following requirements:
the presence of artistic taste;
portfolio;
experience with customers;
the availability of specialized education;
basic knowledge of relevant computer programs;
creative approach to everything.
As a designer you must have the following professional skills:
to be able to draw freehand and graphic editors;
to know design basics;
to master technology tailoring;
to be an experienced PC user;
to be proficient in office equipment.
These professionals need to possess the following personal qualities:
to have observation;
7
to have creative thinking;
to be imaginative;
to have communication skills;
to have mobility;
to have patience;
to be able to work in a team;
to be tactful.
Design can be applied to many areas. Thus, there are several types of design jobs created around the same methodology. Design is a strategic problem-solving methodology that helps drive innovation and develop business success. It improves our quality of life by offering innovative products, systems, experiences and services. The fields of application of design vary according to the manufacturing methods and the environment to which the design methodology applies. They share a common goal: being at the service of the people, from the manufacturing process to the end user and the development of projects.
Here is a list of design jobs.
A product designer works on everyday objects: tableware, furniture, appliances, sports, textiles.
A transportation designer works on vehicles and modes of transport: cars, trains, boats.
A packaging designer creates packaging of products with the brand identity in mind: bottling, fooding, Ikea furniture, etc.
A space designer works on setting up and innovating for dedicated areas: shops, salon stands, offices, hospitals. This profile is similar to that of the retail designer specific to selling points. A space designer also possesses expertise in interior design.
An interaction designer works on products having a behaviour, integrating high technologies: robots, smartphones, human-computer interaction, artificial intelligence, signalling systems ... This profile overlaps the profile of UX Designer
8
and service designer, a more interface-oriented profession. Interaction design is a multi-faceted field allowing to work in many different areas of design.
A virtual reality designer works exclusively to develop solutions related to the world of virtual and augmented realities: virtual sales environment, development of virtual assistants, development of virtual services in the fields of medicine, banking and insurance, but also interfaces to access these services and virtual products.
The UX designer makes the experience of a product or service as pleasant and satisfying as possible. To do so, he or she mobilizes a wide range of methodologies and tools to model the expectations and behaviors of users, as well as the design solutions it can bring.
A service designer analyzes the user's path to design solutions to facilitate access to a service. To do this, it analyzes the different points of contact between the user's path and the service in order to optimize its use.
The graphic designer creates visual communication artworks for the web or to be printed: illustrations, interfaces, logo, graphic composition, etc. This profile also includes components of the UX designer applied to apps and interfaces.
Today, any of these design occupations are becoming increasingly complex and the methodology of design extends to project management and even to business management.
Design thinking is a methodology that allows design, when combined with “Design Doing”, and therefore designers, to become a tool to mold finance, leadership, business management processes. It is possible, without being a designer, to study the methods, to apply them to businesses.
Entrepreneurs, the leaders of the 21st century, work to drive their companies with design methodologies, putting the human and the end user at the heart of its development, at all stages of the development of their companies: branding, personnel management and financial management.
There are other trades designers interact with.
