The most popular hobby is doing things. It includes a wide variety of activities from gardening to traveling, from chess to volleyball. Both grown-

ups and children are fond of playing different computer games. This hobby is becoming more and more popular. Making things include drawing, painting, handicrafts. Many people collect something: coins, stamps, compact discs, toys, books. Some collections have some value. Rich people often collect paintings, rare things and other art objects. Often such private collections are given to museums, libraries.

As for me, I like to listen to music. Three months ago my parents bought me a compact disc player and I decided to collect compact discs. I like different music, it should be good. I collect discs of my favourite groups and singers. I carefully study the information printed on disc booklets. I try to find everything about my favourite singers. Also I like to watch music programmes on TV. I want to keep up with the news in the world of music. Of course, I like to spend my spare time with my friends. We talk about all sorts of things (politics, teachers, and girls). We discuss films, books, TV programmes. In fine weather we like to be in the open air. We find a nice place somewhere in the forest. We make a fire, bake potatoes and have a lot of fun. When the weather is bad, my friends come to my place. We have a good time together.

“My hobby” by John

Hobby is a special interest that people do in their free time. Everybody has his/her own hobby.

As for me I prefer reading poems and short stories. I believe that fiction literature is one of his best ways of expressing feelings and thoughts. They usually mean more if they are raised to the level of art.

I am fond of piano playing and guitar playing too. I finished a musical school two years ago. I am extremely fond of all kinds of dancing: from hiphop to classical ballet. That is why I often attend different theatres and rapdiscos.

Sports play an important part in my life. I am an amateur roller-skater. Once a week I take aerobic classes just to keep fit. Diving is the kind of sports I like best.

I belong to such kind of people who always need changes and new impressions. From this fact it follows that the range of my hobbies is wide. In the nearest future I want to take up horse riding, parachute jumping, and mountain skiing.

My hobby is painting and drawing. I have finished an art school and now I paint and draw in my free time. I depict things that have impressed me deeply: beautiful flowers, poetic landscapes, ancient ruins. I like to paint portraits as well. It is very important to catch a person in a moment of action, feeling, perception and record that moment with unerring strokes. Only geniuses are blessed with this gift. Sometimes I create decorative compositions, large in scale and bright in colour. I paint on canvas and draw on paper. I work in oil and watercolour, pencil and pastel. For me painting is a means to understand the beauty and harmony of the surrounding world, a way to express my own emotions, feelings and perception of life.

It is important for me to study the artistic heritage of great painters. That is why I like to visit museums and art galleries. My favourite painters are Vincent Van Gogh and Victor Borisov - Musatov.

Painting is not the only hobby of mine. I read a lot of books. One of my favourite writers is R.R. Tolkien. In my free time I like to listen to music. Classical music is my favourite one.

“My hobbis” by Richard

I currently have two hobbies. They are collecting coins and skate boarding. Collecting coins is my indoor hobby while skate boarding takes me outside to experience the fresh air. I find that they provide a nice balance of going out and staying in during my free time.

Since I began collecting coins two years ago, I have met many others who share the same burning interest. It started when my father, who is an airline pilot, brought home his unused coins from his trips around the world. I thought some of them looked exotic. They looked very different from our Singapore coins. I had a liking for the various coins immediately and began collecting them. Now, whenever my father goes on his trips, I beg him to bring home as many different coins as he can. Today, I have over two hundred coins from twenty-four different countries.

My interest in skate boarding, however, grew differently. I started three years ago, when I was in primary school, when a classmate of mine introduced skate boarding to me. At first, I found it difficult to balance on a plank of wood on wheel. I also thought it was silly skate boarding when roller blading was so much easier and faster. But after two weeks of skate boarding every afternoon, I began to love the wind blowing in my hair and

the thrill I got going places with it. Today, my favourite skate boarding area is the park by the beach where it's safe and I do not bump into people while skating.

My two hobbies are important to me because they help me relax from studying too much. I make sure that I do my homework before I even think about my coin collection or skate boarding.

6.I like working with wood, I like to feel its texture in my hands. I like to come up with a variety of things, and then bring my ideas to life. I like the joy in the eyes of people when I give them my crafts: jewelry boxes, candlesticks, dishes, etc.

7.I always envied people who can embody the images that they have in their heads on paper. It doesn’t matter how: whether the result is a realistic

or abstract picture, whether it is a new word in art or whether it was already in someone’s work. It is always a miracle. The miracle of how using a piece of paper and a pencil stub can create a masterpiece that makes you stop and wonder at the beauty of life. I am not able to do such a thing!

8. Some may say that this is not a real hobby. They say, sitting for days at a computer, forgetting about the world around us, is a dependency, which should be treated. Reading books is believed to develop the imagination, but the computer does not. But it develops much more: coordination of movements, speed of reaction, ability to act in a team. The books will not teach you this.

The English people who are on holiday either go sightseeing as tourists or they want a rest from sightseeing. Some people like to have their holidays on the seacoast. Sea and sunshine, that's what they look forward to every summer.

But today many people seem to like crowds. They like to meet and make friends with as many people as possible.

You'd sooner make friends at a hotel, but if you want to meet lots of English people, you might like to go to a holiday camp. That doesn't mean sleeping and eating in tents. It's nothing like an army camp; or the kind of camp that Everest climbers live in. Holiday camps in England are permanent buildings with modern conveniences and comfort. There are wooden cabins with good beds, electric light, running hot and cold water. There are large buildings - a dining hall, a large hall for dancing, a cinema, a bar, a cafe, rooms for games such as billiards. There is everything you want in the camp. The camp usually has its own swimming-pool and tennis courts. Some camps are large enough for a thousand people, a camp of a medium size takes about five hundred guests.

There is another suggestion: a caravan holiday. If you brought your car to England, you could hire quite a comfortable caravan for a few pounds a week. There are caravan camps all round the coast, and at these you can get water and other things you need. A caravan holiday wouldn't be lonely. Every evening you'd be in a camp with lots of other people. They're all very friendly. Of course you'd have to cook. You could see a lot of places in a month, or, if you wished, stay in one place for several days and then move to another place.

There is one more way of holiday-making. It's a walking holiday. Walking holidays are much cheaper. In England there is the Youth Hostels Association. It's international. There are hostels all over England now and thousands of young people use them. Members of the Association get beds for night and meals very cheap. They can also take their own food to the hostels and cook it in the kitchen. Here you can meet young people of all classes: factory workers, office workers, shop girls, college students and many young people from European countries. Youth hostels are for people with not much money to spend. You needn't worry about clothes if you decided to use youth hostels. Any old clothes would do. At a hotel you'd need to be well-dressed.

COME YOUTH HOSTELLING

More than 230,000 young people in England and Wales are youth hostellers. There are 250 youth hostels in England and Wales, 150 in Scotland and nearly 3,000 in Europe. Here is what young people in Britain say about youth hostelling.

Sue: Last summer I went youth hostelling with two friends in North Wales. We chose the hostels we wanted to stay in from the handbook, and then we marked them on our map. We planned to walk about sixteen miles every day, but several times we got lost and walked round and round in circles. Sometimes we stayed for two nights in the same hostel, but the limit is three nights and then you have to go to another. I love walking, climbing and the outdoor life; and this holiday combined all three.

Jane: All my school friends said that youth hostelling was fun but I didn't enjoy it. One night, we arrived at a hostel at about 10 o'clock, and it was closed. So we knocked loudly on the door and the Warden opened it and said the hostel was full. He said that we couldn't stay there and that we must find another place. Another place! We were lost in the middle of very lonely countryside and there was not another house in sight. So we spent the night in a field. It was very cold, and at 5 a.m. two friendly cows woke us up. When we could get into hostels, the food was awful, the blankets were dirty and we had to do chores (housework). Each morning, before you leave, the Warden gives you a chore to do, such as washing-up, cleaning the bathroom or sweeping the floor. Youth hostelling is too much like hard work, for me.

Bill: Jane's right. You mustn't arrive at a youth hostel late. They are closed all day from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and then they close again at 10.30 p.m. I thought the food was good. You can either cook your own meals in the hostel kitchens, or sometimes the hostels provide breakfast and supper. They also prepare packed lunches for midday.

Ray: For the price you can't beat youth hostelling. Hostels are graded like hotels. Superior hostels are very comfortable, but also more expensive. You also pay different prices according to your age. You can stay in anything from a shepherd's hut to a baron's castle. I prefer the mountain hut type of hostel. They are often in very remote parts of Britain, set in the most beautiful scenery, but sometimes they don't even have electricity.
