Interview with 16-year-old Helen

Interviewer: How do you get on with your parents?

Helen: I think I get on with them very well, really. We don’t always see eye to eye on some things, like boyfriends - they don't always approve of them. But on the whole, they are understanding. If I had a personal problem, I thịnk I could confide in them.

Interviewer: How strict are your parents?

Helen: Well, my Dad's quite strict about staying out late at night, but I can usually get round him. If I’m nice to him, he usually lets me come home a bit later. My Mum's always telling me to tidy up my room and put things away, and I have to do some housework. But if I compare them with other parents, they aren't very strict.

Interviewer: And who are you most like in your family?

Helen: I think I take after my mother. Everybody says we're both very independent and strong-willed. I like to have my own way. But I'm not spoilt. And my parents always tell me off if I do anything wrong.

Interview with 17-year-old Davis

Interviewer: How do you get on with your parents?

Davis: I look up to them because they've worked hard to bring us properly. Interviewer: How strict are your parents?

David: They can be very strict at times. I told my Dad I wanted a motorbike, but he said it was out of the question – it was too dangerous. My mother is strict about keeping things tidy. I can't get out of doing the washing up and things like that, unless I'm very busy.

Interviewer: How do you get on with your sister?

David: I never agree with what she says, so we are always arguing. We've never been very close, but I get on all right with her. I think I'm much closer to my mother.

Interviewer: What is it like being a parent?

Mother: Bringing up children is very difficult. You always worry about them. You have to be very patient and put up with a lot: noise and even criticism. And you can't always get through to them, sometimes they just won't listen. But the advantages of being parent outweigh the disadvantages. The main thing is to enjoy your children while they are young, because they grow up so quickly.

Interviewer: How strict are you with your children?

Mother: I suppose I'm reasonably strict. They can't do what they like and get away with it. And I tell them off if they do something wrong.

Interviewer: And what is the secret of being a good parent?

Mother: I think you have to give them confidence and let them know you love them. And you have to set a good example through your own behaviour, otherwise they won't look up to you.

Interviewer: And what do you want for your children in the future? Mother: I want them to be happy, and I want them to look back on their

childhood as a very happy time in their lives. Exercise 6. Use the correct preposition.

Exercise 8. Comment on the following questions in groups. Use the phrasal verbs below:

Exercise 9. Compare the rules in your family in groups. Make the list of the main rules discussed. Do you agree with them? Why/ why not?

Exercise 10. Are there different rules for boys and girls in the same family? If so, what are the differences and do you think they are fair?

Exercise 11. Work in groups and make up your own interviews about the relations in your family.

Exercise 12. Work with a partner. Use the phrasal verbs which you have studied. Describe your relationship with one of the following people:

grandparent, teacher, uncle/aunt, parent, brother/sister, neighbor, boss, cousin.

Exercise 13. Translate the quotations and comment upon the idea they convey.

Exercise 14. Organize a role-play to perform in front of the class. The topic of the discussion is "How to talk with teenagers". Possible roles: parents and children in different life situations: educational problems, alcohol addiction, dating, divorce in the family, problems in interpersonal relations with somebody from the child’s environment etc.

Exercise 15. Speak upon the main rules for parents of teenagers. Explain in the class why each rule can be important.

Writing

Exercise 16. Choose one of the topics below and write an essay containing 200-250 words.

1) The generation gap is inevitable. It will always exist.

2) Three main points which must be taken into account when talking to teens.

3) The most common causes of teenagers' problems.

4) Recommendations a psychologist can give to teenagers' parents.

Exercise 17. Read these "Teens' Tips For Parents", write your own tips and discuss in the group. Pay attention to the words in italics. Try to use them in your tips.

Sixty American teens have put together an honest list of what, as they think, their parents should or shouldn’t do. Here are just some of these tips.

–Let us have our privacy unless we give you the right to invade it.

–Respect our feelings. Of course, sometimes we will disagree with each other, so show us your point of view and let us show ours. If our opinion is absolutely wrong in your eyes, tell us why in a polite way. If you respect us, we will respect you.

–Give us freedom to make some mistakes. Of course, you don't want us to make the same stupid mistakes that you made, but sometimes we need to. We learn well from our mistakes, believe us.

–We love to please you, and your opinion is important to us. When you see us doing something good, please praise us.

–Don't take out bad moods on us. We all have bad days, but try not to take yours out on us. When you have a bad day, tell us, and we will leave you alone but we can't read your mind!

–Don't bribe us. We really hate to tell you this secret, but bribing us doesn't work. We love getting money and other things from you, but this portrays you as a softy.

–We hate it when you tell our secrets to other people. When we tell you a secret and then hear you repeating it to your best friend, we lose our trust in you. If we tell you something for your ears only, then keep it there!

–Don't compare us to our brothers and sisters. You make us feel stupid and - which is more important – you make us feel left out.

–Never, but never give us the silent treatment!

–Have fun with us. Don't be afraid to take our places and have good time with us. We will all remember out childhood days forever, so help us, make them unforgettable.

–Most of all, remember that we love you and want to be your friend.

Text № 1. My friends

My name is Dan. Let me tell you about my friends. I have many friends but my best friend is Peter. He is eighteen. Now we are first-year students of the University. He is a good student because he studies hard and is very diligent. He wants to become a good specialist. He often helps me with my English lessons and I’m grateful to him for that. We made friends with Peter when he and I began our studies in one group. We have very much in common: we like the same music, we like the same films.

I want to tell you a few words about his appearance. He is rather tall, strong and well-built. He has an oval face, straight nose, dark-brown hair, blue eyes and a nice smile. People find him good-looking. Peter is a good sportsman. He goes in for sports. He plays football and basketball well.

I have another friend. Her name is Natasha. She is a student of our group and she is my roommate at the hostel. We share one room with her. She is a blonde with blue eyes, she is slim and pretty. She has long fair hair. She likes riding a bike and computer games.

I like all my friends very much. I think they are all my faithful friends.
