(I can = I am able; He could = he was able), он имеет собственный оттенок значения am/is/are/able to – быть в состоянии,
быть свободным, was/were able to – смог, сумел, удалось (= manage).
He is аn honest man. He is not able to do it (не способен).
Jack was an excellent tennis player. He could beat anybody (мог вы-
играть).
But once he had a difficult game against Alf. Alf played very well but in the end Jack was able to beat him (смог).

Ann’s eyes are not very good. She has to wear glasses for reading. Jane was feeling ill last night so she had to leave the party early;
He is to meet us at the station at 5.
This is Dora. She is to share your room.
Для образования вопросительной и отрицательной формы эквива- лента have to используются вспомогательные глаголы do/does/did.
Why did you have to go to hospital?
Do you have to get up early on weekends?
Tom doesn’t have to work on Sundays.
Mustn’t и don’t have to имеют разные значения:
You mustn’t tell anyone what I said.
She stayed in bed this morning because she didn’t have to go to work.
117
May I do it?
No, you mustn’t. –
Must I do it?
No, you needn’t do it now. You may do it tomorrow if you like.

Am/ is/ are allowed to |
Was/were allowed to |
will be allowed to … |
Can/could/may/might I borrow your umbrella?
No, don’t. No, you may not.
No, you must not. п. No, you can not.
You are (not) allowed/permitted to wait here.
Should

(Degrees of Comparison of Adjectives and Adverbs)
thin – thinner – thinnest, hot – hotter – hottest.
easy – easier – easiest.
That text is more difficult. –
This is the most difficult text. –
119
Next time you will be able to find it more easily. –
5.У прилагательного old имеются две формы сравнительной и превосходной степеней: old – older и elder, oldest и eldest.
Nick is Peter’s eldest brother, isn’t he?
Mary has the largest flat.
Mary’s flat is the largest.
Lesson 13 is one of the most difficult lessons.
good – better – the best bad – worse – the worst much – more – the most little – less – the least
far – farther – the farthest further – the furthest
old – older – the oldest elder – the eldest
(The Passive Voice)
That school was built last year.
