Great Britain

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (the UK, Great Britain) is situated on 2 large islands: Great Britain and Ireland. The total area of the UK is 240 000 square kilometers, its population is about 56 mln. people. The country is washed by the Atlantic ocean, the Irish sea and the North sea. Great Britain is separated from the Continent by the English Channel. The capital of the country is London. The UK consists of 4 parts: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, administratively it is divided into 55 counties.

Great Britain is a Parliamentary Monarchy. Officially the head of the state is the Queen (or the King), but her power is limited by Parliament. There is no written constitution in Great Britain. The main principles of British legislation are expressed in other historic documents.

There are 3 branches of power in the UK: legislative (Parliament), executive (Government) and judicial. Parliament of Great Britain consists of 2 Houses: the House of Lords and the House of Commons. The House of Lords (the Upper House) consists of 1000 peers who are not elected by people. Members of the House of Commons (the Lower House) are elected by people for a period of 5 years at a general election. After the general election the Queen appoints the head of the government – the Prime Minister, who selects the ministers and forms the government. Judicial power of the country belongs to the House of Lords, the Crown Court and the High Court.

There are 2 main political parties in Great Britain: the Conservative and the Labour.
