Seminar 6. The verb: the categories of person, number and tense Plan
The category of person and number: traditional and modern interpretations.
Time and Tense. The philosophical category of Time and the grammatical category of Tense.
The category of tense: the traditional viewpoint.
The category of tense in terms of a binary opposition.
Modern conceptions of English tenses.
Questions and Tasks:
Speak on the person and number of the English verb. Explain the difference between the categories of person and number and the category of tense.
Disclose the categorial meaning of Tense. Speak about the category of tense as an opposition of two categorial forms: that of the past and that of the non-past. Give examples and the analysis of the morpheme of the Past Tense and Non-Past Tense forms. The productive and non-productive allomorphs as variants of the Past tense morpheme.
Comment on the categorial semantics of the Past and Non-Past forms.
Explain the fallacy of the traditional interpretation of the Non-Past form as “Present”.
What is meant by the inner controversial character of the category of tense?
There are various interpretations of the category of tense: that of Professor A. I. Smirnitsky and Professor I. P. Ivanova, that of Professor M. Y. Bloch. Speak about their viewpoints and those of English and American scholars: G. Comrie, H. Sweet, F. R. Palmer, M. Joos, W. Francis, Quirk and alia.
Speak on the problem of the Future Tense. Comment on the L. S. Barkhudarov’s viewpoint.
Comment on the problem of the so-called Sequence of Tenses.
