The data obtained from both the surface and underground will allow the suitability of the site to be evaluated and it is important to develop a formal approach to such an evaluation. It is likely that any evaluation will be centred on a comparison of anticipated rock mass conditions, based on the development of the integrated structural, lithological and geochemical models of a site, with data that are subsequently collected. This ‘‘validation’’ process, which has been discussed in many international fora, can probably best be considered in terms of building confidence in the disposal concept (as regards the properties of the rock mass and the associated hydrogeological and hydrogeochemical systems).
