1. Planning arson-for-profit investigation results in a blend of organizational and management plans of action. Planning provides the principal concepts required to accomplish this task. Experienced criminal investigators are cognizant of careful investigative planning with case decisions being made almost instinctively. However, for those investigators, who are not as creative, an investigative checklist plan may prove helpful. Experience has shown that some fire step are required in a comprehensive arson-for-profit investigation. There are a fire scene investigation, an assessment of investigative needs, formulation and evaluation, of a strategic plan and so on. There are some logical steps in the investigative planning process. Subtasks in the areas of the investigative activities and support are linked above and below each major step. 2. There is no substitute for adequate fire scene documentation and causal analysis. The remainder of the successful arson-for-profit investigation depends upon this process.
