Intentional or Аccidental.

1. In examining the fire scene and the evidence obtained during the investigation, it has to be established whethere the fire was intentional or accidental. Accidental fires include children’s playing with matches, careless smoking, careless use of open flame, malfunctioning of electrical systems, and acts of God. If it’s determined that the fire was intentional, the purpose for setting the fire has to be determined. Most investigators don’t ask themselves why the fire was started. In order to defend against arson, motive must be determined.

2. An arsonist can have many motives: revenge, profit, kicks, sexual gratification, vanity, to cover up a burglary, or as a means to an end – a violent act by a group embroiled in a civil disorder such as a strike. The preponderance of fires set in the United States are motivated by revenge, a great majority of which are set by juveniles. Closely behind revenge, motivated fires are fires for profit. Depending on the area of the country, this category can account for up to 40 percent of arson fires. Many investigators misclassify profit – motivated fires as the acts of juveniles or burglary arson (burglars set fires to cover up evidence of the crime).

3. The characteristics of arson fire generally will tell the investigator the arsonist’s intent. For example, a male usually sets fires that can be characterized as aggressive. Usually motivated by revenge or profit, he wants total destruction, and usually will accelerate his fire with flammable liquids such as gasoline.

4. On the other hand, females are known for setting small, less aggressive fires. They rarely set fires for profit, and seldom use accelerants. In most cases, the female arsonist sets a fire for attention or revenge, for example, if a married woman sets fire to her bed, it may mean that she is unhappy with her married or something about the marriage. Maybe she suspects that her husband is having extramanital affair. By burning her bed, which is a symbol of security to almost every body, she is trying to rid herself of an unpleasant situation.
