Theme # 3: “Lexicography” (15 hours)

Subtheme # 1: “The theory of lexicography. Lexicographic researches and the term dictionary”

Tasks:

1. Make a summary about the following themes:

- lexicography, the aims and principles

- the object of lexicography

- the term dictionary

- lexicographic researches of English and Kazahstani linguists

2. You are going to have a teaching practice on the next semester. Work out a mini-dictionary devoted to young learners. Pay attention to the type, volume, illustrative materials while compiling. Then present your dictionary.

3. Work out a plan for the seminar concerned with lexicography. Include the following points to your plan:

- Aims and objectives of the seminar

- Questions for brainstorming

- Problematic questions to discuss

Subtheme # 2: “The main problems of lexicography”

Tasks:

1. Analyze the problems of dictionary compiling and evaluate each problem according to their importance. And get ready to answer the questions of an instructor orally.

Themes to discuss with the instructor:

1) Main stages of the work at a dictionary

2) Factors that depend on arranging the number of meanings a word is given and their choice

3) Ways the meanings of words may be defined

4) Arrangement of supplementary material for learners and teachers

2. Identify the peculiarities of inside forms of special dictionaries in any language. Suggest some ideas to be improved in special type of dictionaries.

3. Work out a plan for the lecture concerned with lexicography. Prepare a slide show for the lecture. Include the following points to your plan:

- Aims and objectives of the lecture

- Questions for brainstorming

- Problematic questions to discuss

- Typical tasks

- Pragmatic-professional tasks

- Literature

Subtheme # 3: “Types of dictionaries”

1. Find out a kind of dictionary is suitable for you from the list: books, CD-ROMs, Internet, General and Special dictionaries.

a) Suggest as much advantages and disadvantages as possible of a kind of dictionary.

b) Make a presentation of a dictionary you have chosen or compile your own short dictionary and present it to class.

2. Analyze the structure of a dictionary and give the items should be included. Suggest some ways or practical tips which facilitate to use the dictionaries effectively. Include at least 10 or 15 tips. Analyze each point according to their importance.

3. Make a table that shows different types of dictionaries in English. Explain their differences. And again rank them according to their importance in language learning and teaching process.
