RECRUITMENT

Recruitment is the set of legal activities used to select people who best meet the needs of organization. It involves finding, hiring and training people. An employer has several options to consider when he wants to hire a new employee. First of all, he may look within his own company. But if he can't find anybody suitable for the position he will have to look outside the company. If there is a personnel office in the company, he can ask them to help him to find a qualified applicant. The employer can also use another valuable sources, for example, employment agencies, consulting firms, placement offices and professional societies. He can also advertise in a newspaper or in a magazine and request candidates to send in resumes.

People looking for work or wanting to change their job generally read the openings advertised in newspapers. To reply to an advertisement is to apply for a job; you become an applicant or a candidate. You write an application, or fill in the company’s application form, and send it, along with your curriculum vitae (CV) (GB) or résumé (US). You are often asked to give the names of two people who are prepared to write a reference for you. If you have the right qualifications and abilities, you might be short-listed, i.e. selected to attend an interview.

It is not uncommon for the personnel department or the managers responsible for a particular post to spend eighty or more working hours on the recruitment of a single member of staff. However, this time is well-spent if the company appoints the right person for the job.

A typical selection process would involve six steps.

Step 1. Fill out application form.

Step 2. Go through interviewing process.

Step 3. Take employment tests.

Step 4. Submit background records.

Step 5. Take physical exam.

Step 6. Pass trial period.

The employer has two sets of qualifications to consider if he wants to choose from among the applicants. He must consider both professional qualifications and personal characteristics. A candidate's education, experience and skills are included in his professional qualifications. These can be listed on a resume. Personal characteristics, or personality traits must be evaluated through interviews.

Often the organization will hire the employee conditionally. This enables the person to prove his or her worth on the job. After a period of perhaps a month, six month or a year, the firm has the right to discharge that person based on evaluations from supervisors. Such system makes it easier to fire inefficient or problem employees. They realize that their job involves effective training programs and proper managerial incentives.
