Студент живописи и фотографии Университета Джорджии Майкл Стайп помимо учебы пел в группе «1066», исполнявшей кавер-версии известных панк-песен. В 1978 г. в музыкальном магазине города Афины, штат Джорджия, он познакомился с продавцом Питером Баком, неплохо владевшим гитарой. Оба они были увлечены английской "новой волной", в результате чего было решено собрать группу, которая получила название R.E.M. ("Rapid Eye Movement"). 5 апреля 1980 г. состоялся концертный дебют. Он прошел успешно, и уже в феврале 1981 г. группа выпустила свой первый сингл – энергичный постпанковский "Radio Free-Europe". Он был выпущен скромным тиражом 1 тысяча копий, но стал очень популярным на радио. Жесткий гитарный саунд, сильный узнаваемый вокал Стайпа, отличные тексты - все это делало R.E.M. самой заметной группой американского постпанка. В мае 1983 г. вышел дебютный альбом группы – "Murmur", разошедшийся тиражом 150 тысяч копий. Вместе с The Police R.E.M. отыграли серию концертов, а затем отправились на гастроли в Англию. "Живые" выступления группы пользовались большой популярностью - манера Стайпа петь, вплотную приблизив губы к микрофону, очень нравилась слушателям. У группы много поклонников, хотя нельзя сказать, что музыканты находятся на пике популярности. Их хиты, когда-то взрывавшие чарты во многих Европейских странах (“Losing My Religion”, “Shine Happy People”, “Everybody’s Hurts”), сейчас звучат по радио как классика рока.
