Чтобы узнать подробности необычного проекта, мы связались с ним в Лондоне, где Майкл работает над симфонией в честь наступления 3-го тысячелетия для Вашингтонского национального симфонического оркестра.
Вы полагаете, в музыке группы Metallica есть какие-то элементы симфонизма?
Нет. Но мощь этого квартета сопоставима с мощью огромного оркестра, а ее ритмический характер наверняка понравится симфоническим музыкантам в качестве физического упражнения.
Насколько я знаю, это уже не первый ваш контакт с «Металликой»?
Да, я делал оркестровку Nothing else Matters. И если вы слышали эту песню, то наверняка заметили, как мало там слышно оркестра. Во время концертного исполнения это будет звучать иначе.
Вас не смущает, что в прошлом слияние рок-ансамблей и оркестров приводило к довольно позорным результатам вроде «Концерта для группы и оркестра» Deep Purple?
Нет, такими вещами я не занимаюсь. Если я участвовал в совместных работах оркестров и рок-групп, то лишь в тех случаях, когда музыка рок-группы соответствовала духу симфонического оркестра. Например, оркестровки для «Стены» «Пинк Флойд». Я также написал концерт для электрогитары, который исполнял Эрик Клаптон, и опять-таки это не был какой-то странный гибрид, как в ранние годы симфорока. Тогда главная проблема заключалась в том, что рок-музыканты руководили оркестрами. А я классический музыкант по образованию.
Как, по вашим прогнозам, будет выглядеть этот концерт: оркестранты наденут кожаные куртки, или «Металлика» вырядится во фраки?
Думаю, никакого маскарада не будет. Мы будем выглядеть и звучать на удивление нормально.
А как вы себе представляете вечеринку после концерта? Классические музыканты обычно упаковывают инструменты, снимают фраки и расходятся по домам. Но поскольку это совместный концерт с «Металликой», наверное, будет море выпивки, поклонниц за кулисами?
Не знаю. Я наверняка очень устану: шутка ли – целый вечер перед музыкантами руками махать! Могу только точно сказать, что это будет большая вечеринка: представьте себе оркестр в сотню человек плюс «Металлика» и их антураж…
собираетесь привезти это шоу в Россию?
Очень хотелось бы. Насколько я знаю, сейчас как раз ведутся переговоры на эту тему. Но оркестр будет местный.
