Computers in Flight Safety

1. Computers collect and analyze more data about potential aircraft designs and business plans than human beings could ever manage in a practical sense. But aviation computer power doesn't stop there. Advanced technologies enable a pilot to send commands to onboard computers simply by applying slight pressure to the stick, pedal and throttle. The computers, in turn, combine these commands with sensor data on the aircraft's speed, altitude, angle of attack and stress.

2. These complex computers calculate the engine power and surface movements needed to implement the pilot's instructions. The computers then make continuous, minute adjustments in the aircraft's control surfaces, to keep the aircraft stable throughout the maneuver. These adjustments occur millions of times per second, giving the pilot smoother control of the aircraft. Adjustments are also made for headwinds and other variables. These changes allow an aircraft to reach its destination on time, with greater comfort and fuel economy.

3. The steep approach path angle is one important requirement to be met by aircraft operating in London City Airport. No less important is the capability to meet the requirements for take-off from the airport's relatively short runway (3.935 ft/1.999 m). For certification aircraft must prove that they have the necessary power to continue take-off and clear obstacles following the (assumed) failure of one engine.

Kyiv Boryspil Airport

1. After reconstruction of Boryspil airport Kyiv (and Ukraine) has possessed a modern and efficient airport. The refurbished and modernized international airport is capable to handle 600-700 passenger departures per year, or a total traffic of approximately 2.5 million passengers a year. New departure gates have been created, connecting via enclosed link-ways two air bridges, with a ramp descending to the apron for those passengers boarding planes via buses. Baggage of departing passengers processed from the check-in area via one of two conveyors to the new baggage processing area. Baggage passes through an on-line security X-ray system, making Boryspil airport one of the first airports in the world to comply fully with new 1С АО standards on 100% hold baggage screening.

2. International arrivals have been moved from the previous international terminal to the ground floor of the Ukraine Hall, providing a considerable increase in space available for immigration and customs processing, and baggage retrieval. Two new baggage carousels in the. arrival area ensure that passengers receive their baggage in a timely and efficient manner. A large number of updated electronic signs have also been installed providing clear instructions to both departing and arriving passengers, as well as to the visitors of the airport.

3. There is also coach service between Boryspil airport and downtown Kyiv. Coaches now operate to meet all departures and arrivals of Ukraine International Airlines flights at Boryspil airport. All passengers traveling with Ukraine International Airlines to/from Kyiv may now book not just their flight, but also a seat on the coach. Once a reservation has been made, a ticket for the coach journey can be issued at the same time as the air ticket.
