1. Kyiv is the capital of Ukraine. 2. It is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. 3. More than 2 million people live in Kyiv. 4. Kyiv is situated (stands) on the river Dnipro, the longest river of Ukraine. 5. Kyiv is the largest political, industrial, cultural and transport centre of Ukraine. 6. Khreshchatic is the main street in the capital. 7. There are many beautiful modern buildings, shops, hotels, cinemas, cafes in this street. 8. It is the best street in Kyiv. 9. Kyiv is one of the oldest cities in Europe. 10. It is more than 1500 years old. 11. There are many (a lot of) places of historic interest in it: St. Sophia Cathedral, Kyiv-Pechersky Monastery, St. Volodymir Cathedral, Golden Gates and many others. 12. There are also many museums and monuments in Kyiv. 13. Kyiv is the centre of education and science. 14. People who know foreign languages are necessary for the development of the techniques, economy and arts in the modern society. 8. People want to know foreign languages because they are very important. 9. They are important for the development of international contacts and cooperation. 10. Knowledge of foreign languages opens many doors before people, gives them many opportunities and advantages. 11. Knowledge of foreign languages has always been a sign of high culture and deep erudition. 12. It helps to promote cultural, educational and technical cooperation among nations. 13. That is why one of the characteristic features of life of our country today is a great interest in the study of foreign languages. 14. Some people learn languages because they need them for their work, others travel abroad, for the third studying languages is a hobby. 15. Everyone who knows foreign languages can speak to people from other countries, read foreign authors in the original, which makes your outlook wider. 16. It is not surprising that many intellectuals and well-educated people are polyglots. 17. The growth in political, scientific, economic, cultural and educational contacts with different countries has set the scene for a renewed interest in studying foreign languages. 18. To know a foreign language today is absolutely necessary for every educated person, for every good specialist. 19. The great German poet once said: "He, who knows no foreign language, does not know his own one". 20. That is why in order to understand better the world around we have to study foreign languages.
