8. Read the text. Define the tenses:

Of all things people probably hate diseases most. Suppose you plan to finish your work tomorrow. It’s very important in the morning you find out that you can’t get up as usual. You have a headache. You feel a little dizzy and you cough, you can’t recognize your voice because your nose is clogged. It’s hard for you to swallow.

You look for the thermometer. At last the temperature is taken 38.4. You have to stay at home.

Now the doctor will be sent for. He’ll be here in an hour or 2. He’ll take your hand and say: “Well, what troubles you, young man? Having a cough? I see you’re sneezing… Well, let me feel your pulse… Now let’s sound your lungs… Breathe, please”. Then he will conclude: “Well, nothing serious, just a flu. But you’ll have to keep your bed for a few days… And here’s the prescription. Take the pills regularly and keep yourself warm. Wish you good luck, old fellow”.

The doctor will leave. He’s busy. He has a lot to do. You have a lot to do too, but you will stay in bed: you are ill.

9. Read and translate the text: The Health Service

The level of medical service both in Britain and the USA is very high. Every employed citizen is obliged to pay weekly a certain amount of money to the National Health Service. The sum necessary to run medical services is very big and a large part of it comes not from weekly forms payment but from taxes. Various forms of Medical Insurance are widespread in these countries.

Everything is paid. For example, in the USA if you turn to a city hospital, you should pay at least $50. Separately you will pay for a consultation, minimum $15-20. You should take a prescription for purchase of many drugs in American drugstores.

However you can take medical service free of charge in medical institutions attached to different charity and religious organizations. Thus, the National Health Service (NHS), UK, provides free medical treatment for visitors from EU and Commonwealth countries and to visitors from other countries with reciprocal health arrangements. An NHS prescription costs ₤5.25 at present.
