THAT IS TO SAY …
When you are having a conversation, fixed expressions and idioms will link your ideas and show the listener(s) that you are making a new point, disagreeing, etc. Using these phrases gives you time to think about what you are going to say next, and helps your listeners to know what they can expect and so understand your argument better.
A Read the following dialogue and notice the use of the expressions in italics
I say, have you heard? Richard Smith's leaving. You could apply for his job at the London office.
Funnily enough, you're the third person who's said that today. Actually, I did know about it, but I wasn't planning to apply.
Why ever not? If you ask me, it's a great opportunity. You'd be living in London and travelling around a lot, not doing the same thing every day like you do here.
Yes, but I don't want to live in London. For one thing, it would mean leaving all my friends, and for another, I’d be further away from my parents, and they're not getting any younger. And on top of that, I'd have to find somewhere to live in London.
There is that. Accommodation would be more difficult to find and it would be more expensive. On the other hand, you could afford to pay more money because you’d have a better salary.
Believe me, I have thought about it, but I really don’t think I want to take on more responsibility.
Well, at the end of the day it's your decision. You have to do what you think is best.Yes, and I've made my decision. I'm happy here, so can we leave it at that?

2. to emphasize what you are about to say? __________
3. to introduce a different, often contrasting point of view? __________
4. to give the first reason for something? __________
5. to give another, perhaps more important reason? __________
6. to introduce a topic of conversation? __________
7. to say something that will surprise the other person? __________
8. to agree with what somebody has just said? __________
9. to put an end to an argument? __________
10. to show that you have considered all the various
aspects of the question? __________
C Match these other expressions to the uses in B above. There are two for each use.
what's more I’m telling you believe it or not to begin with guess what into the bargain mind you |
by the way for my money (and/so) that's that as it happens all in all end of story you've got a point there |
