Exercise 3. Possessives in Gerund Phrases as Subject

Answer all of the following questions with a subject containing a possessive (pro)noun in a gerund phrase. Use a noun, pronoun, or the name of the person.

EXAMPLE

question: What impresses you about one of your grandparents?

response: My grandfather's playing golf at the age of 80 impresses me.

  3. What is something that your boyfriend / girlfriend / husband / wife does that annoys you?

Exercise 4. Test your knowledge of proverbs.

Match the following English-language proverbs with their definitions. Use Gerund as Subject to complete the definitions. How many of the proverbs do you agree with?

A verb + gerund construction often refers to a real, past,

known, complete, experience or event.

Bob recommends my going to the theater.

(The pronoun emphasizes that I will go.)

My boss resents Jim's arriving late for work.

(I arrive late and he doesn't like it.)

A possessive (pro) noun is sometimes added before the gerund to indicate who is carrying out the action of the gerund.
