‘Listen! Here comes another song!’ From far away down the corridor came the beating of drums. Then the singing began. ‘Veruca Salt!’ sang the Oompa-Loompas.’ Veruca Salt, the little brute, Has just gone down the rubbish chute (And as we very rightly thought That in a case like this we ought To see the thing completely through, We’ve polished off her parents, too). Down goes Veruca! Down the drain! And here, perhaps, we should explain That she will meet, as she escends, A rather different set of friends To those that she has left behind — These won’t be nearly so rened. A sh head, for example, cut This morning from a halibut. “Hello! Good morning! How d’you do? How nice to meet you! How are you? “And then a little further down A mass of others gather round: A bacon rind, some rancid lard, A loaf of bread gone stale and hard, A steak that nobody could chew, An oyster from an oyster stew, Some liverwurst so old and grey One swelled it from a mile away, A rotten nut, a reeky pear, A thing the cat left on the stair, And lots of other things as well, Each with a rather horrid smell. These are Veruca’s newfound friends That she will meet as she descends, And this is the price she has to pay For going so very far astray. But now, my dears, we think you might Be wondering ― is it really right That every single bit of blame And all the scolding and the shame Should fall upon Veruca Salt? Is she the only one at fault? For though she’s spoiled, and dreadfully so, A girl can’t spoil herself, you know. Who spoiled her, then? Ah, who indeed? Who pandered to her every need? Who turned her into such a bra Who are the culprits? Who did that? Alas! You needn’t look so far To nd out who these sinners are. They are (and this is very sad) Her loving parents, MUM and DAD. And that is why we’re glad they fell

In 1789, on the 18th of June, the twenty-three-year-old Karamzin arrived with the diligence from Tilsit at 7 o’clock in the morning in Königsberg [6, p. 19]. It was a Thursday, and on Friday the town got ready for the annual fair. Such fairs were held at the feast-day of the city’s patron saint, and Königsberg’s cathedral was consecrated not only to the Virgin Mary, but also to St. Adalbert, whose death in 981 is commemorated on the 20th of June.
The coaches stopped at the Post Ofce on the market square behind the Royal Castle in the Altstadt [1, p. 81]. Karamzin took lodging for one night “в трактире у Шенка”, the inn “Bey Schenck” owned by Johann

Philipp Schenck in the Kehrwiedergasse [1, p. 29], just around two corners of the postal station. After eating at the table d’hôte, where the loud and coarse talking of Prussian ofcers and captains annoyed him, Karamzin hurried to pay his respects to Immanuel Kant (1724—1804) [6, p. 20—21], then a 65 years old bachelor living with a man-servant and a female cook at Prinzessin-Strasse No. 3, — a short walk from his inn. Karamzin called Kant’s house a “маленкий домик”, although it had two stories with ve window axes. Built in the seventeenth century, Kant had bought it for 5,500 guilders from the widow of the painter Johann Gottlieb Becker (1720—1782), who had portrayed him, on December 30, 1783 [2, p. 102—103]. On the lower oor were Kant’s lecture room (for the professors taught in their homes) and the cook’s quarters, and on the upper oor the dining room, his bedroom and library as well as his study [4, p. 179]. Since Karamzin asserts in his Письма русского путешественника that “смелость городa берeт — и мне отворились двери в кабинет его” [6, p. 20], we may assume that taking the domestics by surprise he had stormed upstairs and knocked on the door of Kant’s study. He described the interior as sparsely furnished (“приборов не много. Всe просто” [6, p. 21]), as is conrmed by other contemporaries [13, p. 254]. Kant’s study had only a desk, a chest of drawers, a few chairs, and two tables laden with manuscripts and books. The walls were so blackened by the candles and the smoke of Kant’s pipe that one could write with a nger on them [13, p. 316, 320]. A portrait, an engraving, of Jean Jacques Rousseau was the only decoration [4, p. 180—181].
Karamzin had approached the house with the late Moses Mendelssohn’s image in mind of the “alles zermalmende... [14, p. 2 v], and was perplexed to come upon a “маленькой, худенькой старичeк, отменно белый и нежный” [6, p. 20]. A colored pencil drawing (Dresden, Kupferstichkabinett) by Veit Hans Schnorr von Carolsfeld (1764—1841) faithfully portrays the Professor of Logic and Metaphysics, how he looked in 1789. Kant spoke fast, with a low voice, and not intelligibly, so that Karamzin had to strain his ears [6, p. 21]. Further aggravating was for him the circumstance that Kant’s colloquial speech was using vocabulary and pronunciations of the local dialect [4, p. 60].
Surprising is not only the fact that the young stranger, who arrived unannounced and, as he confessed, without any letter of recommendation, got a three hours’ private audience with the distinguished philos-

opher, but also that he was graciously received at a time, when Kant usually entertained lunch guests, often till 6 o’clock, and then went out for a walk [4, p. 164], — habits, he strictly adhered to.
In the course of the conversation, which ranged from China to the nature of man, Karamzin learned of two essays by Kant, which he had not seen yet, and whose titles his host jotted down for him. While the “Critik der practischen Vernunft” had only recently, in 1788, been brought out by Hartknoch in Riga and it was thus pardonable not to have been aware of it yet, the Grundlegung zur Metaphysik der Sitten had already been published in 1785. When Karamzin praised Kant’s metaphysics, he was referring to his Critik der reinen Vernunft of 1781 and his Prolegomena zu einer jeden künftigen Metaphysik of 1783.
Kant remarked to Karamzin that his writings could not please everyone, as few were appreciating metaphysical subtleties. Even Wieland, whom Karamzin saw later in Weimar, scarcely racked his brains about Kant’s metaphysics [6, p. 76]. Indeed Kant had been hurt that almost nobody had understood his Critik der reinen Vernunft [18, p. 9—10], therefore the admiration of the young Russian must have lifted his spirits. Karamzin did not doubt that as far as the philosophers were concerned, compared with Kant in Königsberg Plato was an infant [6, p. 212]. No wonder then that Kant readily expounded for the avid traveler the meaning of moral law and why according to reason there should be an afterlife [6, p. 20—21] [56].

Yuri Annenkov’s Portrait of Aleksandr Tikhonov is an audacious paradigm of the Russian Avant-garde that melds textures, patterns and perspectives, absorbing the jostling inuences of Russian folk art, Cubo-Futurism and Expressionism to embody the artist’s New Synthetism.
Painter, graphic artist and designer for stage and screen, Annenkov was both creator and chronicler. His career ran parallel to the seismic events of the 20th century, spanning almost seventy years, traversing two continents and creating linkages between the Silver Age, post-revolutionary Russia and postwar Europe. Throughout the twenties he participated in some of the most signicant international exhibitions, including those in Berlin (1922), Venice (1924) and Paris (1925), and capped his scenographic career in 1954 with an Academy Award nomination for best costume design for his work on Max Ophüls’ ‘Madame de...’. II.
Although the inuence of Ilya Repin still loomed large in Russian artistic life, Annenkov was drawn to the new and experimental, the avant-garde. Following an initial period of study at the studios of Savely Zeidenberg (1908—1909) with fellow pupil Marc Chagall, and Jan Tsionglinsky (1909—1911), Annenkov embarked on a new exciting stage of his development when he moved to Paris to study at L’ Académie de la Grande Chaumière and La Palette in 1911.
With a studio on rue Campagne-Première in Montparnasse, Annenkov found himself at the centre of artistic life in Paris. His training was completed as much under Maurice Denis and Félix Vallotton as it was alongside the artists who frequented La Rotonde and La Coupole, where he imbibed the inuences of Cézanne, Braque and Picasso. […]
Back in St. Petersburg against the stormy backdrop of World War I and revolution, Annenkov became heavily involved in theatre, experimenting with directing and scenography, as shown by his early collaboration with Nikolai Evreinov on the production of Homo Sapiens at the Krivoe zerkalo (Curved mirror) theatre. Annenkov also concentrated on graphic work, his sharp line equally matched to his acute political sense, providing illustrations for books and satirical journals, such as Satirikon, Solntse Rossii, Lukomor’e and Argus. With the advent of revolution, Annenkov’s creative energies were mirrored by the radical fervor of the time, symbolised by his illustrations for Aleksandr Blok’s 1918 publication of his Dvenadtsat’ (The Twelve), a hugely controversial poetic rumination on the October Revolution. His signicant contribution to the realisation of Evreinov’s 1920 Vziatie Zumnego Dvortsa (The Taking of the Winter Palace), the last and most ambitious of the mass spectacles conceived along Marxist-Leninist lines to educate the masses, showcased Annenkov’s propensity to capture the spirit of the time through an aesthetic means, mythologizing the subject while popularising it

Endlessly encyclopaedic as it seems, there are times our beloved English language fails us.
Ironically, there are various terms for wordiness: loquacious, garrulous, verbose, voluble, prolix. But when we want our language to be economical and summarise a relatively complex concept in a single word, it can be restrictive. Which, believe me, is frustrating when you have word counts to stay within [57].
п. «никогда», «никакой», «никто», «нельзя», «ни один»; англ.: «never», «no one», «nothing», « neither».

а) He knows more than anyone about being married to duty.
b) He had an awesome presence, which demanded respect, and an expectation of high standards, which was unremitting. He had a trained eye for what had not been done.
c) Parties involved in these types of transactions and their lenders are now hesitant to rely solely on the traditional contractual protections such as defense and indemnication provisions. Governmental covenants and agreements of liability protection are not foolproof. They also are not available in all state.
d) Products may not be returned to [Company’s Name] without prior authorization as set forth in [Company’s Name]’s Return Policy which is available at https://companyname.com/about/policies. Customer must contact [Company’s Name] to obtain a Return Material Authorization (“RMA”) number. Any product returned to [Company’s Name] without proper authorization will be returned to Customer at Customer’s expense. For each defective product, Customer must provide a technical report describing the defect in detail. Multiple products may be returned under one blanket RMA number. If multiple products are returned, each line item must have a separate RMA asset number and a separate description or defect code. Software only products may not be returned

But there is a curious nding which suggests something else might be going on. Simply imagining a traumatic event and writing a story about it also makes wounds heal faster, so perhaps it’s less to do with resolving past issues and more to do with nding a way of regulating your own emotions that makes a difference. But now new research from New Zealand suggests it’s not essential to do the writing before you are wounded. It can work just as well if you do the writing afterwards. They did this either before or after a punch biopsy on their upper arm. The people from the expressive writing group were six times more likely to have a wound that had healed within 10 days than the people in the control group. We’d need to have more studies conducted with real life patients, but maybe one day when we’ve had an operation, we might be told to go home with instructions on expressive writing.
