(1920—1924) и серии литографий «Смерть» раскрывается ужас
бессмысленной гибели людей и скорбь всех матерей об утрате
человеческих жизней.
С антивоенной темой тесно переплетается тема материнства, в которой автор передает пронзительное состояние любви
и горя, соотнося глубину материнских чувств простых женщин
и Девы Марии, оплакивающей Сына. В скульптурных композициях «Башня матерей» (1937), «Пьета» (1938), «Материнство»
(1937) личные эмоции художницы поднимаются до общечеловеческих смыслов. Символично, что свою последнюю графическую работу, на которой изображена мать, защищающая детей, выполненную в 1942 году, художница назвала строчками
из «Поучения» Гёте: «Семена для посева не должны быть перемолоты».
Эмоциональная сила сотен произведений Кете Кольвиц в
их достоверности, точно найденном соотношении переживания глубоко личного и общественно значимого. «Я считаю,
что между художником и народом должно быть взаимопонимание»1, ― писала Кете Кольвиц [из рабочих материалов авторов

25 октября 2002 г. факультет романо-германской филологии
проводит ежегодную межрегиональную научно-практическую
конференцию «Проблемы лингвистики и методики препода-
вания иностранных языков».
К участию в конференции приглашаются специалисты, научные сотрудники, преподаватели и аспиранты с сообщениями
о результатах коллективных и индивидуальных исследований.
Планируется обсудить следующие вопросы:

А beef stew
Ingredients
• 800 g lean stewing beef
• 2 tablespoons plain our
• olive oil
• 2 cloves of garlic
• 1 handful of shallots
• 2 sticks of celery
• 4 carrots
• ½ a bunch of fresh thyme, (15g)
• 4 ripe vine tomatoes
• 150 ml red wine
• 500 ml organic beef stock
• 2 fresh bay leaves
• Worcestershire sauce
Method
1. Preheat the oven to 160 ºC / 325 ºF / gas 3.
2. Dice the beef into 1cm pieces, then toss in a bowl with the
our, making sure the meat chunks are totally covered. Set aside.
3. Add a splash of oil to a large casserole pan and place it over
a medium heat. When it’s hot, add the beef and cook for 5 minutes,
or until the meat is browned all over. Transfer to a plate and leave
to one side.
4. While the beef cooks, peel and nely chop the garlic, then peel
the shallots and halve most of them, keeping a few whole. Trim and
roughly chop the celery, then peel, trim and chop the carrots into
2 cm rounds.
5. Splash a little more oil into the pan, then add the veg. Strip
the leaves from the thyme and add to the pan, then cook for 10 to
15 minutes, or until the vegetables are softened.
6. Return the beef to the pan, then stir through the tomatoes and
wine. Once the liquid has been absorbed, add the stock, bay leaves
and a splash of Worcestershire sauce.

7. Season with sea salt and black pepper, then transfer the stew
to the oven to cook for 3 to 4 hours, or until the meat is tender and
pulls apart easily with forks.
8. Serve your beef stew with creamy mashed potato and, if you

raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels. (look up ‘vocabulary’).

be referred to as Near-Frozen Gnat’s Urine, so that all can be sold
without risk of further confusion.

The Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna
Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna was the fourth of ten children
and the second daughter of the Emperor Paul I and his wife Sophie
Dorothea of Württemberg, who adopted the Russian name of Maria
Feodorovna. On the assassination of Paul I in 1801, her eldest broth-

er succeeded to the Russian throne as Emperor Alexander I and he,
in turn, was succeeded by their second youngest brother the Emperor Nicholas I (1796, r. 1825—1855).
Her early education, like that of her favourite sister Alexandra
(1783—1801), was largely supervised by her grandmother the Empress Catherine the Great. She was fteen when, on 17 February
1799, the heir to the Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Prince Friedrich Ludwig arrived in St. Petersburg following negotiations on a
possible marriage begun the preceding year. A formal betrothal was
announced on May 5th followed by their marriage at the Palace of
Gatchina on 23 October 1799. Her sister Alexandra was married to
Archduke Joseph of Austria a week later, also at Gatchina.
Their son Paul Friedrich, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin from 1837 till 1847, was born in 1800. Grand Duchess Elena
Pavlovna died in September 1803, six months after giving birth at
Ludwigslust, Mecklenburg-Schwerin to a daughter, Marie Luise
(1803—1862), who inherited her gold service.
Marie-Luise married on 7 October 1825 Georg, Duke of
Saxe-Altenburg (1796—1853), son of Friedrich, Duke of Saxe-Altenburg and his wife, Charlotte Georgine of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. The service then passed presumably to their eldest son Ernst
I, Duke of Saxe-Altenburg (1826—1908). According to the catalogue when the service was sold at Christie’s in 1931, the lot was
accompanied by a manuscript, now lost, detailing its provenance.
This was written by Ernst I’s great-nephew, the son of his successor
Ernst II (1871 — r. 1908, abd. 1919, — 1955), Friedrich Ernst,
Prince of Saxe-Altenburg (1905—1985) stating that it had descended in the Saxe-Altenburg family since 1826 [из рабочих

SAPPHO OF LESBOS
Sappho, ‘violet-haired, pure, honey-smiling Sappho’, was born
around 630 BCE in the town of Eresos on Lesbos, an island in the
Aegean Sea. One of the earliest women poets of Antiquity and one
of the greatest lyric poets of all time: her seminal inuence as a cultural and literary gure is as powerful today as it was 2,500 years
ago. Considered to be on an equal footing with Homer, and included

by the Alexandrians among the nine lyric poets alongside Alcaeus and Pindar, her fame ― even during her lifetime ― was without
equal. An epigram in the Anthologia Palatina (9.506) ascribed to
Plato states:
Some say the Muses are nine: how careless!
Look, there’s Sappho too, from Lesbos, the tenth.
Sappho was born into an aristocratic family, and we know from
documentary evidence that she was exiled for a time in Sicily. Herodotus tells us that her father was a man called Scamandronymus and
various papyrus fragments identify her mother as a certain Cleïs.
She had three brothers: Eurygius, Larichus and Charaxos. The eldest of the three, Charaxos, was a merchant captain trading in Egypt;
there, to his sister’s displeasure, he became involved with an Egyptian courtesan whom Sappho calls Doricha.
In Roman times, Sappho was praised by Horace, translated by
Catullus and imitate by Ovid. The continued transmission of her
work was critically endangered by the dwindling interest in the
Aeolic Greek dialect in which she composed her verses and this
was compounded by the ritual burning of her books at the instigation of Pope Gregory Nazianzen in 380 and again under Gregory VII in 1073, likely motivated by their ‘pagan’ subject matter. But
with the Renaissance interest in recovering and reviving the culture
and arts of Antiquity came a resurgence in translations of the scant
fragments of Sappho’s work that survived: her sensual and melodic style; her elegiac compositions, largely directed at women and
brimming with eroticism and reection; her unique blend of formal poise, lucid insight, and blistering passion led to a reimagining
and recasting of the author’s persona ― Sappho became a mythologised gure of controversy and legend [из рабочих материалов

In 1899 Aivazovsky wrote to his biographer Nikolai Kuzmin:
‘Even in deep old age I still have a strong passion within me and
I work constantly’ (quoted in G. Cafero and I. Samarine, Light,
