A “cultural script” could be dened as the accepted pattern of behavior expected of people who ll certain roles in a certain culture. The French people of the seventeenth century had a very denite cultural script for the role of “king”. That script had been greatly elaborated on by Louis XIV. In no way could it be made to t Homeric kings, most of whom would be seen by French people of goût to be living the lives of impoverished noblemen in their own day and age. In De la Motte’s words:
One does not see a multitude of ofcers or guards around the kings; the children of the sovereigns work in the gardens and guard the herds of their fathers; the palaces are denitely not superb, not the tables sumptuous. Agamemnon dresses himself and Achilles prepares with his own hands the meal he gives to Agamemnon’s ambassadors.
Actual descriptions of a kind not deemed admissible in a cultural script confront translators with a denite challenge when they try to translate Universe-of-Discourse elements. Yet the problems are by no means limited to descriptions of “real” things: they also surface in the case of “literary” devices such as the simile. The Trojan hero Harpalion, pierced by the same Greek hero Meriones, but this time with an arrow, dies in the arms of his comrades and “hoos te skoolēks epi gaiē/keito tatheis” [like a worm on the earth he lay stretched out] (lines 654-5). Rochefort objects to the vulgar image of the worm and resorts, once again, to zero translation: “Frappé par Mérion d’un coup inattendu, / Il tombe et se débat, dans la poudre étendu” [Hit by Merion with an unexpected blow / He falls and writhes, stretched out in the powder] (255). “Se débat,” though somewhat graphic, may still be said to fall within the bounds of acceptable diction, and “la poudre” (powder) takes the place of the less decorous “poussière” (dust) [1].

[…] there is a broad consensus our eld is becoming increasingly heterogeneous, both within itself and in its relationship to neighbouring elds. From its original roots in linguistics and literary studies, research has branched out in all directions, sometimes conceptualized

as “Turns”, for instance the “Cultural Turn” (for a survey, see SnellHorn by 2006). Some of this expansion has been stimulated by advances in technology and machine translation, and by the emergence of new translation practices such as the varieties of multimodal translation and non-professional translation.
This development carries both a risk and a challenge. The risk is that the eld will become so fragmented that it will break up into smaller, more specialized elds that no longer communicate with each other, hold joint conferences or publish in the same journals, or seek to relate their research to a shared general theory. Such a fragmentation would of course reect the way science has progressed through the centuries: in the broadest terms, the mother-discipline of philosophy can be seen to have given birth to the separate elds of astronomy, physics, chemistry, biology and so on. The challenge is to nd ways of strengthening those features that still connect the different fragments. And one key concept here is that of consilience.
“Consilience” is dened by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary as “the linking together of principles from different disciplines especially when forming a comprehensive theory”. It denotes the idea of the unity of all knowledge, an idea that was particularly important in the European Enlightenment, a period of humanist and scientic optimism. The concept has been given a new lease of life by the biologist Edward O. Wilson, whose book Consilience, appeared in 1998. Wilson was rst known as a specialist on ants, but later became the founding gure of the eld of sociobiology, which aims to use concepts and hypotheses derived from biology to examine and explain the social behaviour of human beings. Signicantly, and ironically, sociobiology is thus itself an interdiscipline. Wilson has thus succeeded in fragmenting the eld of science one step further, by adding an extra fragment, at the same time as he has endeavoured to link the fragments together, at least conceptually. Can Translation Studies fol low suit? [2]

The steps and approaches that are needed for successfully addressing the challenges of sustainable development are as follows:
A new concept for environmental and economic development is needed, which includes the creation of new production and consumption models based on greater energy efciency in the economy without additional burden on natural resources and the climate. Development of an innovative, energy-efcient, ‘green’ economy, and implementation of ‘green’ technologies that minimize negative environmental impact are benecial from both environmental and economic viewpoints. Secure economic growth is only possible if there is a proper, long- term balance between the interests of the economy and the need for nature conservation. Such growth will ensure that the environmental and social costs associated with growth are kept to a minimum.

When the valley closed to the public at dusk, Egyptologists in jeans and laborers in long robes and turbans got to work. Shouting directions and encouragements over the roar of fresh air being pumped into the tomb, they quickly attached ropes to the head and foot of the cofn lid and lifted it out of the sarcophagus. After a pause to reposition the ropes, they slowly pulled up a plain wooden box. Inside, cradled by cotton batting and yellowed muslin, lay the mortal remains of King Tutankhamun: a serene face with a scarred left cheek, a barrel chest, skeletal arms and legs, all blackened by resins poured on during his burial rites.
After months of carefully recording the pharaoh’s funerary treasures, Carter began investigating his three nested cofns. Opening the rst, he found a shroud adorned with garlands of willow and olive leaves, wild celery, lotus petals, and cornowers, the faded evidence of a burial in March or April. When he nally reached the mummy, though, he ran into trouble. The ritual resins had hardened, cementing Tut to the bottom of his solid gold cofn. “No amount of legitimate force could move them,” Carter wrote later. “What was to be done?”

Can’t learn a foreign language? Not true, say scientists
All one needs to do is listen to a word 160 times over that period, neuroscientists say. After that the brain will have formed a whole new network of neurons specically tasked with remembering that word.
The process happens far quicker than previously thought, they maintain.
Dr Yury Shtyrov and his team made the discovery after placing electrodes on the heads of 16 healthy volunteers to monitor their brain activity. First they recorded the pulses generated when they listened to a familiar word. Then the volunteers were made to listen to a madeup word, over and over again. Initially the brain had to work hard to recognise the new word. But after 160 repetitions over 14 minutes, the new memory traces were “virtually indistinguishable” from those of the already familiar word, said Dr Shtyrov.
He said: “What this suggests is that practising language is important. Every little helps. Just perception ― listening ― is helpful. Our volunteers didn’t repeat the words. Getting them to repeat the words would probably extend the new neural networks to the part of the brain tasked with speech,” he said. However, he and colleagues at the Medical

Research Council’s Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit developed the approach, called constraint-induced aphasia therapy (CIAT), not to help tourists learn French, but to help stroke patients regain their speech.
He said: “This research suggests that faster rehabilitation may be possible if treatments for people with brain damage, such as stroke patients, target the brain’s ability to rapidly create these memory traces.” The next step was to test the theory in stroke patients, he added. The research is published today in the Journal of Neuroscience [35].

Seeking to mine gold from market inefciencies, academics have spent decades trying to discern persistent patterns behind the statistical returns on different classes of equities. Advisors have watched them debate the merits of small-cap stocks vs. large-cap counterparts and value vs. growth.
But Roger Ibbotson, founder of the eponymous investment research and consulting rm and chairman and chief investment ofcer of Zebra Capital Management, has discovered another dimension to the performance analysis landscape: liquidity. Keynoting the rst annual Innovative Alternative Investment Strategies conference in Chicago on July 28, Ibbotson discovered stunning return differentials with equities when they are classied according to their liquidity.
The results are published in a working paper, “Liquidity As An Investment Style,” that Ibbotson co-authored with Zhiwu Chen in July
2007. It was updated in December 2009.
“Liquidity dominates size” as a return predictor, Ibbotson told attendees. “Public equity markets have gradations of liquidity with different liquidity premiums.”
19
Ibbotson studied 3,500 U.S. stocks by quartile and rebalanced annually from 1972 to 2009. He dened liquidity as total annual trading volume divided by total shares outstanding. One takeaway from his presentation at the conference, which focused on alternative investments, was that investors don’t have to go all the way down the liquidity spectrum to private equity to nd additional return. That’s because Mr. Market apparently is willing to pay a higher price for the most liquid securities, reducing returns from these equities.
The notion of liquidity as an investment style makes intuitive sense. Ibbotson’s data produced some interesting ndings. Take the small-cap universe, which is broadly presumed to generate higher returns that can be traced to a so-called size premium.
That’s true for some small-cap shares, but when Ibbotson sorts smaller-company equities into different classes based on their size and liquidity over a 37-year period, some interesting facts emerge. The worst-performing group is highly liquid, small-cap stocks, which returned 5.9 % annually over the period. Ibbotson’s explanation is that these are micro-cap stocks that have been “pumped up.”
In contrast, the equities that have produced the best returns over 37 years were illiquid small-cap concerns, which generated an astonishing 17.87 % annual return over nearly four decades. In all likelihood, these companies represent small, overlooked companies that attract little interest or trading activity.
It should be noted that studies of the small-cap performance advantage have found that most of that outperformance since 1926 can be traced to a nine-year period from 1974 to 1983. That era was characterized by gas station lines, stagation and two nasty recessions, and yet small stocks levitated while blue-chip companies watched their shares founder.
While the trend persists among large-company stocks, the premium for illiquid big businesses is much narrower. The most liquid shares of large rms returned 9.46 % while the least liquid among this group recorded a 12.29 % annual gain over the 37-year period.
Highly liquid growth stocks, the stocks everybody knows and many portfolio managers own, performed dismally, throwing off a meager return of 3.32 % a year over almost four decades. In contrast, the least liquid value companies gave investors 20.63 % annually during the same time frame [36].
