“Margaret C. Anderson’s Little Review”
Sophia Estante and Lorrie Moore (Mentor), English
This research looks at the work of Margaret C. Anderson, the editor of the Little Review. The review published rst works by Sherwood Anderson, James Joyce, Wyndham Lewis, and Ezra Pound. This research draws upon mostly primary sources including memoirs, published letters, and a complete collection of the Little Review. Most prior research on Anderson focuses on her connection to the famous writers and personalities that she published and associated with. This focus undermines her role as the dominant creative force behind one of the most inuential little magazines published in the 20th Century. This case example shows how little magazine publishing is arguably a literary art [40].

“Biogeography of Chemical Defense in Birch Trees”
Sarah Brown and Michael Stevens (Mentor), Botany
The Latitudinal Defense Hypothesis predicts that levels of defense are highest near the equator and decrease toward the poles. This hypothesis is based mainly on insect herbivory that occurs during the summer. Mammilian herbivory in the winter is a more likely driver of plant defense levels in northern latitudes. Early successional trees such as birches are favored by re and provide an important food source for mammals like snowshoe hares. In order to test the Latitudinal Defense Hypothesis, we collected birch seeds from eight locations in northwestern Canada

and grew seedlings in a common garden. We assessed levels of defense by counting resin glands because resin glands are negatively correlated with snowshoe hare preference. This research will provide valuable information regarding the biogeography of defense and address the role of re in plant-mammal interactions on a continental scale [40].

Conference Announcement and Initial Call for Papers
DC-20XX
International Conference on Dublin Core and Metadata Applications
“Metadata for Semantic and Social Applications”
22―26 September 20XX
in Berlin, Germany
http://www……
The annual Dublin Core conferences bring together leading metadata researchers and professionals from around the world. DC-20XX in Berlin will be the eighth in a series of conferences held previously in Tokyo, Madrid, Singapore, Düsseldorf and London.
The DC-2008 conference is organized jointly by the Competence Centre for Interoperable Metadata (KIM), Max Planck Digital Library, Göttingen State and University Library, the German National Library, Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, and Dublin Core Metadata Initiative and supported by Wikimedia Deutschland.
Conference Theme
Metadata is a key aspect of our evolving infrastructure for information management, social computing, and scientic collaboration.
33
DC-20XX will focus on metadata challenges, solutions, and innovation in initiatives and activities underlying semantic and social applications. Metadata is part of the fabric of social computing, which includes the use of wikis, blogs, and tagging for collaboration and participation. Metadata also underlies the development of semantic applications, and the Semantic Web — the representation and integration of multimedia knowledge structures on the basis of semantic models. These two trends ow together in applications such as Wikipedia, where authors collectively create structured information that can be extracted and used to enhance access to and use of information sources.
Recent discussion has focused on how existing bibliographic standards can be expressed as Semantic Web vocabularies to facilitate the ingration of library and cultural heritage data with other types of data. Harnessing the efforts of content providers and end-users to link, tag, edit, and describe their information in interoperable ways (“participatory metadata”) is a key step towards providing knowledge environments that are scalable, self-correcting, and evolvable.
DC-20XX will explore conceptual and practical issues in the development and deployment of semantic and social applications to meet the needs of specic communities of practice.
Papers, reports, and poster submissions are welcome on a wide range of metadata topics, such as:
• Metadata generation (methods, tools, and practices)
• Semantic Web metadata and applications
• Conceptual models and frameworks (e. g., RDF, DCAM, OAIS)
• Social tagging

Cities at night, I feel, contain men who cry in their sleep and then
say Nothing. It’s nothing. Just sad dreams. Or something like that...

Swing low in your weep ship, with your tear scans and your sob probes, and you would mark them. Women ― and they can be wives, lovers, gaunt muses, fat nurses, obsessions, devourers, exes, nemeses ― will wake and turn to these men and ask, with female need-to-know, “What is it?” And the men say, “Nothing. No it isn’t anything really. Just sad dreams.”
Just sad dreams. Yeah: oh sure. Just sad dreams. Or something like
that.
Richard Tull was crying in his sleep. The woman beside him, his wife, Gina, woke and turned. She moved up on him from behind and laid hands on his pale and straining shoulders. There was a professionalism in her blinks and frowns and whispers: like the person at the poolside, trained in rst aid; like the gure surging in on the blood-smeared macadam, a striding Christ of mouth-to-mouth. She was a woman. She knew so much more about tears than he did. She didn’t know about Swift’s juvenilia, or Wordsworth’s senilia, or how Cressida had variously fared at the hands of Boccaccio, of Chaucer, of Robert Henryson, of Shakespeare; she didn’t know Proust. But she knew tears. Gina had tears cold [5].

3.5 Safe Work Procedures
3.5.1 Safe Work Procedures (SWPs) are the most common form of administrative controls in workplaces. It is a set of systematic instructions on how work can be carried out safely. Using information obtained from risk assessment, a set of SWPs should be developed for various work activities that have a risk of falls from heights.
3.5.2 A SWP generally provides instructions on how jobs are to be performed, persons involved in these jobs, what safety precautions must be taken and what kind of training and/or certication is necessary to be able to competently carry out these jobs.
3.5.3 The SWP must be communicated to everyone involved in the job so that each person is aware of his roles and responsibilities. The SWP must also be communicated to those who will be affected by the job.
3.5.4 It is necessary to provide adequate levels of supervision to ensure that SWPs are being followed. Regular review of the effectiveness of the procedures must be undertaken.
3.5.5 Make sure that the work is well organised so that workers do not increase the risk of a fall for themselves or others. For example, sequence jobs so that different trades are not working above or below each other at the same time.
Prohibition of Access
• Marking out an area can be effective in making sure that people are not exposed to fall hazards. There should be adequate signage to warn all persons against access to the hazardous area. If possible, a physical barrier should be erected to prevent unauthorised access.
• Employers should provide relevant information to employees on site and adequate supervision to ensure that no worker enters a “No Entry” area.
3.6 Use of Personal Protective Equipment
3.6.1 Personal protective equipment (PPE) should be used only as a last resort, after all other control measures have been considered, or as a short term contingency during maintenance or repair, or as an additional protective measure.
3.6.2 The effectiveness of PPE as a control measure is dependent on the correct equipment being chosen, tted and worn properly at all times when required by users.
39
3.6.3 PPE should be selected taking into consideration the following factors:
• The type of hazard;
• Areas of the body that require protection;
• The degree of protection required;
• Ease of use, comfort and convenience;
• Compatible with other PPE;
• Reliability; and
• Ease of maintenance.
• 3.6.4 PPE that can be used for work at heights include:
• Travel restraint equipment;
• Personal fall arrest equipment; and
• Work positioning equipment.
Refer to the WSH Council’s Guidelines on Personal Protective
Equipment for Work at Heights for more information.
3.6.5 Before personal fall protective equipment is chosen as a control measure for work at height activities, the following conditions shall be fullled:
• The PPE is assessed to be suitable and adequate for the persons to conduct the assigned work at heights tasks safely;
• Persons issued with the PPE must be trained and possess the skill and knowledge to use the equipment / system safely; and
• Suitable and adequate anchor points or lifelines that allow all persons to achieve 100 percent tie-off at all times shall be provided (see paragraph 9.6.5.3 of this Code). All persons involved in work at heights must be made aware of the anchorages [41].
