Agreement with others can be a touchstone of truth for a priori questions, especially for moral ones. After all, as per Kant’s enlightenment optimism, everyone is in an equally good position to get moral questions right. If I disagree with another rational agent about a moral question, then one of us must be wrong and, all else being equal, there is no reason to assume that it must be her who is wrong. Thus, in moral matters we can never simply dismiss disagreeing parties as long as they are rational [42].
Rationalizing is the attempt to present one’s violations of the moral law as justied or at least as excusable. In doing so, an agent corrupts her grasp of central features of morality (purity and strictness), a grasp she owes to her common human reason. Kant is concerned that agents become entangled in a web of excuses and pseudo-justications that seemingly allows them to uphold their self-esteem as moral agents despite the moral violations they commit. Whilst rationalizing primarily aims to present one’s own moral transgressions as innocent to oneself, Kant warns that ‘dishonesty, by which we throw dust in our own eyes […] extends itself also externally, to falsity or deception of others’ (Kant 1996b, 84-5, [VI: 38.23-6]). If others demand a justication or explanation from a rationalizer, she will present her pseudo-justications to them. If they buy her rationalizations, they are likely to deem themselves justied under similar circumstances [Ibid.].

Another such example for turning contributions other agents can
make into a matter of introspection is Kant’s conception of conscience as an ‘internal court’ (Kant 1996a, 560, [VI: 438.11]). The accused and the judge cannot be the same person, otherwise the prosecutor would always lose (Kant 1996a, 560, [VI: 438.29―33]). The internal court is therefore divided into separate roles. Kant here avails himself of the model of an interpersonal proceeding with different perspectives, a juridical court, but all roles are occupied by different aspects of the agent (prosecutor, defence counsel), or the agent in her entirety (the accused) or an ‘analogy’ of a morally perfect being, which the agent has to assume (the judge) (Kant 1996a, 561, [VI: 439.4―440.2]). Conscience is ultimately solitary and other perspectives remain abstractions or imaginations created by the agent herself [42].

Interpreters usually work in pairs but when we’re actually interpreting we’re on our own, hidden away from the audience inside soundproof ‘booths’, claustrophobically small cubicles containing two chairs,

two consoles, two headsets, two microphones, and a window that provides an excellent view of the backs of the delegates’ heads and of the podium at the front of the room. The booths are marked with the name of the target language: English-booth interpreters interpret into English, French-booth interpreters into French.
The six booths correspond to the UN’s six ofcial languages: English, French, Russian, Spanish, Chinese and Arabic. International organisations such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund also use these languages at their conferences. But the most important language in most international organisations has no name: it is the institution’s own bureaucratese, its linguistic Esperanto. We never do something, we implement. We don’t repeat, we reiterate and underscore. We are never happy, we are gratied or satised. You are never doing a great job: you are performing your duties in the out- standing manner in which you have always discharged them. There is no theft or embezzlement, but rather failure to ensure compliance
with proper accounting and auditing procedures in the handling of nancial resources. This is a language the interpreter must master very
early on.
All interpreters perform the same tasks, regardless of the language. But asking us to describe how we do what we do is like asking a centipede how it walks. We’ve been compared to air trafc controllers juggling fty ights at once, or less atteringly, to parrots or ventriloquists’ dummies. A colleague once suggested that the interpreter is like a soldier who spends endless hours in training and then has three seconds in the heat of battle to make a series of life-and-death decisions [43].

Lauded by many as the greatest maritime artist of his time, Aivazovsky’s genius lay above all else in his capacity for capturing light. In his celebrated seascapes his talent allowed him to breathe life into water; the desert provided a new medium for further experimentation. In the present lot, the apex of the Great Pyramid provides the compositional centre of the work, bathed in light, while the Nile glistens in the background. While the rich tones of the sun and the warmth of the sand recall his romantic inclinations, by 1878 Aivazovsky’s works had become extraordinarily realistic. After becoming acquainted with Aivazovsky in Rome, Turner was so moved and impressed by his ability he composed the following lines:

Following Isaak Levitan’s death in 1900, Alexandre Benois re-
marked upon the artist’s ability to capture the ineffable charm of our
[Russia’s] desolation, the grand sweep of our spaces, the mournful celebration of Russian autumn and the enigmatic allure of Russian spring’.
Perhaps more than any other Russian artist, Levitan is recognised for creating archetypal images of the rodina or motherland; imbuing simple motifs such as the birch tree with an emotive or symbolic resonance that instantly communicates the drama of the Russian landscape. Writing in exile in 1931, the composer Rachmaninov declared: ‘Russians feel stronger ties with the soil than people of any other nationality’. The events of the 20th century have resulted in vast displacement of the Russian people be it for reasons of fate, ight or adventure; the appearance of this painting at auction provides the opportunity to acquire a sublime vision of Russia’s landscape, captured by a recognised Russian master. Admirers and collectors of Levitan’s work are by no means limited to his countrymen; while unmistakably Russian in soul, like the prose of Dostoevsky or the music of Tchaikovsky, Levitan’s genius is such that it transcends his nationality [45].
With regard to the article’s structure, it will follow the ‘Five W’s and One H’ approach and will therefore look into the what, who, where, when, why and how of ITr (Interpreting and Translation) practice and

research. Each of these questions in subdivided into two specic followup queries. For the sake of clarity, it should be noted that ITr will be understood here in a broad sense, as translation of translation (Gambier 1994, 413; 2003, 57). This denition does not exclude relay interpreting but for methodological reasons and due to word-count limitations this practice will not be considered here. However, it is acknowledged that in-depth studies on relay interpreting, as well as those comparing relay interpreting with other variants of ITr practice, are clearly needed. ITr research will, in turn, be taken as research that address the topic of ITr as a primary issue (rather than one that is secondary, as has generally been the case in Translation Studies to date) [46].
“He looks”, said Millat after a cursory glance, “like a chief.” Samad never au fait with the language of the Willesden streets, nodded soberly and patted his son’s hair. “It’s good that you see the difference between you two boys, Millat, now rather than later.” Samad glared at Alsana as she spun an index nger in a circle by her temple, as she tapped the side of her head: crazee, nutso. “Others may scoff, but you and I know that your brother will lead other out of the wilderness. He will be a leader of tribes. He is a natural chief.” Millat laughed so loud at this, so uncontrollably, that he lost his footing, slipped on a wash cloth and broke his nose against the sink [8].
Men. If they’re not “mansplaining” things to women they’re “manslamming” us in the street, “manspreading” on the tube or “manterrupting” us during work meetings. Even as a hairy, sensible-shoe-wearing man-hater ― otherwise known as a feminist ― the rise and rise of the man-shaming portmanteau has left me feeling a little uncomfortable [47].

Across from Petworth, Tankic is rising again, and tapping his glass: ‘Cam’radayet,’ he says. ‘Says he understands our excellent visitor likes yokes,’ explains Lubijova, ‘He is pleased, because also in Slaka we like yokes very much.’ ‘Of course,’ whispers Princip to Petworth, ‘Many of them are in ofce.’ ‘He tells our visitor, you will go on your tour to Glit, so here a yoke of Glit, where the yokes are about peasants. One day a man meets on the road a Glit peasant who is crying over the corpus of his dead donkey. “I am sorry is dead your mule,” says the man…
“It is much worse than you think,” says the peasant, “He was not an ordinary mule. Since a week, he had learned to live without eating.” So he makes another toast: to all here, who have not learned to live without eating. Also to the beautiful ladies, this time sincerely.’ ‘And to the politicians, who nd for us all our food,’ says Princip, raising her glass, ‘May their efforts one day be rewarded [9].

The 1686 Kochański, Rosenheim comes from what is commonly referred to as Stradivari’s Amatise Period. It would be a misconception to believe that all of Stradivari’s works prior to 1690 were of the dimin-

utive and feminine outline associated with the Amatis. With a back length of 35.6 cm. and width across the bouts of 16.9 cm., 11.6 cm. and 20.9 cm., it shares dimensions and attributes we associate with the bolder ‘Golden Period’ works ― though on closer examination the inuences of Nicolò Amati are still present: notably the exceptionally ne workmanship and a full arch that begins its descent sooner to the edging, making for wider and shallower channeling and a more robust edge than seen on any Amati. The masculine composition all translates to a surprisingly bold-sounding violin. As with the 1679 Hellier, the 1685 Guyot and the 1686 Rosgonyl, the one-piece back is carved from the same handsomely gured slab-cut maple. What is interesting to scholars and collectors is that the violin bears one of Stradivari’s earliest labels. These were printed for use in the decade of the 1660s and left the last year of the date blank. With the preprinted label reading 166_Stradivari showed typical thrift and business acumen. Changing the third digit 6 to an 8 by hand, he dated the violin correctly as 1686 [из рабочих материалов авторов пособия].

More participatory democracy to tackle climate change
Amongst the forms of participatory democracy which can complement and enrich the work of representative institutions, citizens’ assemblies are the best placed to harness the collective wisdom and allow citizens to reclaim the public space, providing the authorities with useful information on people’s preferences and indications on how to reconcile a multitude of conicting interests… The Assembly believes that involving young people in decision-making processes addressing the climate crisis is of key importance and refers to the work of the Advisory Council on Youth of the Council of Europe, which is a living example of participatory democracy at European level and serves as a model to all member States embarking on participatory processes [48].
With the aim of achieving gender balance in migration decision making, and mainstreaming a gender equality dimension in migration policies, member States should develop specic measures to enable the application of equality between women and men in their national policies. To do this they should, as well, encourage horizontal debates on gender equality and gender mainstreaming in migration policies and measures that bring together political decision-makers, local and national governments, civil society, education institutes, private sector and migrants and refugees themselves, including ensuring migrant women’s active participation in these debates
