4. Read the three extracts to get an idea what is meant by оptional CO2 separation and removal technique of a pre-combustion carbon dioxide capture scheme.
First, try and answer the questions. a) What is usually meant by capturing waste carbon dioxide?
b) Which CCS techs are currently being implemented? c) Can you dare say how effective CCS concepts are?
41
4.1. Study the figure illustrating how coal is burned in an integrated
gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power plant to define optional CO2 separation and removal stage.
Inside an IGCC Power Plant
4.2. Read the first extract to find how the CO2 separation is actually
feasible in the process described.
(1) The pre-combustion scheme is related to the IGCC-type of plant. A solid fuel (coal, lignite, biomass and even waste) is gasified by partial oxidation, leading to a synthesis gas composed of mainly H2 and CO. By means of a steam (or water vapor) shift reaction,
CO + H2O (v) ↔CO2 + H2,
the syngas is converted to CO2 and H2, from which CO2 is relatively easily separated. The H2 is the designated fuel for a hydrogen gas turbine, which exhaust gases are led through a heat recovery boiler, after which a typical Rankine cycle is put (as in common CCGTs). Now, but again according to [IEA, 2011], the average relative efficiency loss is of the order of about 20 %, while the increase in overnight cost (per kW installed) amounts to about 45 % and the relative increase in LCOE (per kWhe) would be roughly 40 %.
4.3. Read the second extract to find the options for solid fuel partial
oxidation.
(2) To separate H2/CО, a possibility is the steam iron process, H2/CO reduces any iron oxide as ferrite, magnetite, etc. to metallic Fe, and after
42
you can oxidize the metallic Fe with water vapor obtaining H2/H20 which can be easily separated and iron oxide (which could be reduced again). The problem is that the catalyst is synthesized very easily and the performance will decrease very easily.
4.4. Read the extract to explain the property of the metal oxide to be
exploited in CO2 separation technique of a pre-combustion carbon dioxide capture scheme.
(3) The most economic routes to remove CO are those involving reduction transition metal oxides into less oxidized forms or even into metals, more particularly when the gas mixture arises from hot flue emissions. Here, the metal oxides act as autocatalysts. The progressive decay of the catalytic activity results from the progressive oxide consumption.
CO2 can be retained by base-like adsorbents (soda, KOH, NaOH, Ca(OH)2 or basic clay minerals or their derivatives.

1
One way to combat climate change is to prevent the release of CO2 to the atmosphere by storing it in natural underground reservoirs. This information sheet describes the concept and outlines some of the issues involved.
CO2 produced by large sources, such as power plants and other industrial processes, could be captured and stored underground using: depleted oil and gas fields, сoal seams, and deep saline reservoirs.
Other options include CO2-enhanced oil recovery and CO2-enhanced coal bed methane production. These options are particularly attractive because injection costs are offset by increased fossil fuel production.
2
The IEA Greenhouse Gas R&D Programme has estimated the global potential for CO2 storage in geological reservoirs. These numbers have been
46
compared with the projected total emissions between 2000 and 2050, using the “business as usual” scenario derived by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in 1992. This comparison shows that geological storage could have a substantial impact on CO2 emissions. The estimates for deep saline reservoirs were made in the early 1990s. More recent figures suggest that the storage capacity in geological reservoirs in Northwest Europe alone could be as high as 800 Gtonne CO2, most of which is in deep saline reservoirs. Further research is needed to assess the global potential storage capacity for deep saline reservoirs.
3
Many of the reservoirs that are being considered have already stored gases and liquids for thousands of years. Oil and gas fields are known to be effective stores for hydrocarbons and natural gas. Similarly, methane has been trapped in coal seams since the coal was formed and deep saline reservoirs in sedimentary basins have held water for many thousands of years. There are also many cases throughout the world where naturally occurring CO2 from volcanic activity has been stored in sedimentary rocks for millions of years. These examples give confidence that CO2 can be stored safely for thousands of years. Once it is stored, slow releases of CO2 from geological reservoirs, especially those under the ocean, are unlikely to give rise to safety concerns, unless the CO2 is inadvertently trapped. The risk of a large-scale sudden release of CO2 can be avoided by careful selection of the storage reservoirs. For example, storage in regions that are liable to tectonic or seismic activity should be avoided.
4
In the USA there are currently 74 projects in which CO2 is injected into oil fields for enhanced oil recovery. These projects inject 33 million tonnes of CO2 annually. A more limited amount of CO2 is used for enhanced oil recovery projects in other countries. In a project in the North Sea, CO2 is being injected into an offshore deep saline reservoir. The project, at the Sleipner West gas field off the Norwegian coast, has been operating since
1996. To date over 2 million tonnes of CO2 have been injected underground. Since 1994, acid gases (containing both CO2 and H2S) from natural gas processing plants have been injected into onshore saline reservoirs and depleted oil fields in Alberta, Canada. These are just some examples which
47
demonstrate that storage of CO2 is already taking place. In the future, as geological storage becomes commercial practice, a clear understanding of legal matters will be required. For example, questions of ownership of the reservoirs and their licensing as storage sites will need to be addressed.
5
If geological storage is to be used as a basis for emissions trading or to meet national commitments it will be necessary to verify the amounts that can be stored. Underground volumes of gas can be measured by seismic monitoring, which is an established procedure in the oil industry. So verification of CO2 storage in geological reservoirs will make use of technology that is currently available.
