UNIT 19
NOUNS OF THE 3RD DECLENSION:
VOWEL AND MIXED TYPES
There are three types of nouns of the 3rd declension:
- the main or the consonant type [Units 12, 13, 14];
- the vowel type;
- the mixed type.
The vowel type of nouns of the 3rd declension includes nous of neutral gender
which have the endings -e, -al, -ar in Nominative Case singular.
E.g. -e → rete, is, n,
-al → animal, alis, n,
-ar → calcar, aris, n.
This type of words has some changes in the endings of cases in comparison to
the main or consonant type of nouns.
Abl. sing. — i,
Gen. plur. — ium,
Nom. plur. — ia,
Acc. plur. — ia.
Other endings are similar to the endings of cases of the consonant type.

The mixed type of nouns of the 3rd declension includes:
1. Parisyllabic nouns of feminine gender with endings -is, -is, f or -es, -is, f:
E.g. apis, is, f — bee
tabes, is, f — emaciation
2. Nouns of masculine, feminine and neuter gender (m, f, n) having two or
more consonants at the end of the stem:
E.g. dens, dentis; m,
pars, partis, f;
os, ossis, n.
This type of words has one change in the endings of cases in comparison to the
main or consonant type of nouns. It’s Gen. sing. -ium. Other endings are similar to
the endings of cases of the consonant type.

ANTIBIOTIC MEDICINES
Besides three general types of nouns of the 3
rd
declension (consonant, vowel,
mixed), there are also some more specific features in this group of words:
1. Parisyllabic nouns of feminine gender of Greek origin. In Latin dictionaries
all Greek words are usually marked by the letters Gr. These words have endings -is
both in Nominative singular and in Genetive singular (is, is, f), e.g. dosis, is, f.
Greek words have the following changes in the endings of cases:
Acc. sing. -im,
Abl. Sing. -i,
Gen. plur. -ium.
Other endings are similar to the endings of cases of the consonant type [See
Unit 19].

and -atis in Genetive case (ma, atis, n), e.g. symptoma, atis, n. These nouns are also
