“Vexilla regis prodeunt ...”–
“ e Royal Banners Forward Go…”
(Hymn in honor of the Holy Cross by Venantius Fortunatus, VI c.)
Abstract: is publication consists of two elements; the original translation of the
poem by the late antique poet Venantius Fortunatus “Vexilla regis prodeunt…” and
its brief historical and cultural interpretation. e Coming of a fragment of the
Holy Cross of the Lord to the Kingdom of the Franks gives Venantius an occasion to
o er his poetic commentary on this event. It helps to understand the political
identity of the poet; it combines the external a liation to the barbaric political
union and the idea of the eternal Constantine’s empire which is externally
fragmented but internally connected by the confession of Christ’s faith.
