Archpriest Alexander Gorsky
and the foreign intellectuals:
between the research and confessional
interest
Abstract: is article is consecrated to the problem of the institutionalization of the
research within the Russian theological academies in the 19
through the example of arch. A. Gorsky– one of the rst Russian theologians who
practiced research systematically. We analyze the episodes of his international communication through the Bourdieu’s “ eld theory”. Our aim is to understand, if by
the mid-19
were already established, does it possible to state that professors were engaged in
the international community of theologians, mutually interested in the communication within the “ eld of science”? Our answer is more likely to be “no”: the such
kind of communication was more occasional than systematic. In some cases, research interest was inherited in the formally interconfessional or diplomatic communication, and then we can state that when it comes to the community of theologians and other churchman the “scienti c eld” within the international communicative process hasn’t yet di erentiated. But alongside this we can make some
additional conclusions. Globally, the dynamic of Gorsky’s international communication coincide with the dynamic of the international political agenda (we see the
increase of the activity since the mid-1860’s), and from the other side the Gorsky’s
case (bearing in mind his continuous career development) shows that within the
international communication the research issues, as a “topics for discussion”, are
tended to be marginalized when the o cial status of the interlocutors grows up.
