St. Philaret of Moscow
and the Russian Emperors
Abstract: e article is devoted to the relations between St. Philaret of Moscow and
Russian emperors. e author wrote that St. Philaret, noting the piety of Emperor
Alexander I, but did not share his idea of universal Christianity. With the Emperor
Nicholas I, St. Philaret had complex relations. St Filaret did not sympathize with
attempts to use the Orthodox Church for ideological purposes. Personal relations
between St. Philaret and Nicholas I greatly improved by the end of the reign. Emperor Alexander II accepted the importance of St. Philaret to the Russian Church
and the state, and his wife Empress Maria Aleksandrovna revered him as a spiritual
father. However, St. Philaret did not share very many ideas of the reign of Emperor
Alexander II. First of all, the Moscow Metropolitan opposed the liberalization of
confessional politics and the democratization of socio-political life.
