Metropolitan Macarius (Bulgakov)
and the catholic romantic
ecclesiology in Germany
(by the case of Heinrich Klee’s theology)
Abstract: e article focuses on the ecclesiology of Metropolitan Macarius (Bulgakov) in the context of German Catholic Romanticism. e dogmatic works of Metropolitan Macarius have a special place in the discussions on the Western in uence
on Russian theology. On the one hand, he is one of the greatest representatives of
the theological academic tradition and the author of classical dogmatic works
which became didactic manuals for following generations of Russian theologians.
On the other hand, his works got controversial assessments of contemporaries and
descendants because of the ideas probably borrowed from the Western theology. In
the introductory paragraphs of his works Metropolitan Macarius names several
theologians focusing on the studies of Heinrich Klee (1800-1840), a German Catholic theologian of the romantic direction. e ecclesiology occupies a special place
in the dogmatic theology and it is a key feature of this scienti c direction. e rst
part of the article is dedicated to the main characteristics and features of the German romantic theology. e second part is devoted to the basic dogmatic works of
Heinrich Klee as well as to the context of the development of his theology. Also,
there was made an attempt to analyse and to formulate the ecclesiology of Heinrich
Klee. In the last part the ecclesiological ideas of Metropolitan Macarius are compared with the H. Klee’s doctrine of the Church resulting in existence of connection
between them as well as in the level of dependency of Metropolitan Maarius on the
theology of German Catholic Romanticism represented by Heinrich Klee.
