The Impressionists

The term ‘Impressionist’ was first used as

an insult in response to an exhibition of new

paintings in Paris in 1874.

A diverse group of painters, rejected by the

art establishment, defiantly set up their

own exhibition. Today, the Impressionist

paintings are some of the best-known and

best-loved in the collection. It takes a leap of

the imagination for us to realise how radical

the movement was considered in its day.

What characterises Impressionism for most

people today is both the subject matter

and the technique. Landscapes, and scenes

from modern urban and suburban life

painted in bright, pure colours, are typical.

Impressionists often began (and sometimes

completed) their paintings outdoors rather

in a studio, and their rapidly applied

brushstrokes are often visible.

Monet is probably the most famous of the

group, particularly for his paintings of

his garden at Giverny with its pond full of

water-lilies and Japanese-style bridge.

Monet was fascinated by the changing

effects of light on landscapes, and

particularly on water. He often painted

the same scene several times, seeing how it

changed at different seasons and hours of

the day.

His late water-lily paintings are almost

abstract masses of colour. Their tranquillity

is extraordinary considering that he painted

them during the First World War, and could

frequently hear the sound of gunfire from

his garden.

2 Equivalence at word level

If language were simply a nomenclature for a set of universal concepts, it would be easy to translate from one language to another. One would simply replace the French name for a concept with the English name. If language were like this the task of learning a new language would also be much easier than it is. But anyone who has attempted either of these tasks has acquired, alas, a vast amount of direct proof that languages are not nomenclatures, that the concepts ... of one language may differ radically from those of another... Each language articulates or organizes the world differently. Languages do not simply name existing categories, they articulate their own.

(Culler, 1976: 21-2)

This chapter discusses translation problems arising from lack of equivalence at word level; what does a translator do when there is no word in the target language which expresses the same meaning as the source language word? But before we look at specific types of non-equivalence and the various strategies which can be used for dealing with them, it is important to establish what a word is, whether or not it is the main unit of meaning in language, what kinds of meaning it can convey, and how languages differ in the way they choose to express certain meanings but not others.

2.1 THE WORD IN DIFFERENT LANGUAGES 2.1.1 What is a word?

As translators, we are primarily concerned with communicating the overall meaning of a stretch of language. To achieve this, we need to start by decoding the units and structures which carry that meaning. The smallest unit which we would expect to possess individual meaning is the word. Defined loosely, the word is «the smallest unit of language that can be used by itself (Bolinger and Sears, 1968: 43)». For our present purposes, we can define the written word with more precision as any sequence of letters with an orthographic space on either side.

55

Many of us think of the word as the basic meaningful element in a language. This is not strictly accurate. Meaning can be carried by units smaller than the word (see 2.1.3 below). More often, however, it is carried by units much more complex than the single word and by various structures and linguistic devices. This will be discussed in more detail in the following chapters. For the moment, we will content ourselves with single words as a starting point before we move on to more complex linguistic units.

2.1.2 Is there a one-to-one relationship between word and meaning?

If you consider a word such as rebuild, you will note that there are two distinct elements of meaning in it: re and build, i.e. ‘to build again’. The same applies to disbelieve which may be paraphrased as ‘not to believe’. Elements of meaning which are represented by several orthographic words in one language, say English, may be represented by one orthographic word in another, and vice versa. For instance, tennis player is written as one word in Turkish: tenisci; if it is cheap as one word in Japanese: yasukattara; but the verb type is rendered by three words in Spanish: pasar a maquina. This suggests that there is no one-to-one correspondence between orthographic words and elements of meaning within or across languages.

Words Without Thought

It’s а funny thing about clichés. We simultaneously love and hate them. We use them all the time and we get sniffy when other people do the same. Every so often the Plain English Campaign publishes а list and for the next few days you cannot pick up а paper without seeing them all lovingly quoted. Reporters are ordered to ring up famous people and ask them for their most hated cliché. Competitions are held to see who can construct а sentence containing the most and the worst. Public figures such as Tony Benn – normally concerned only with the deeply serious ishoos – join in the fun. It seems to have become а new national pastime.

No doubt there will be а television series one day: Naтe That Cliché. Football managers and «HR» executives will be forbidden to take part – for the same reason that we ban professionals from choosing their area of expertise for Mastermind. It just wouldn’t be fair to the others. Spin-offs will include the Great Book of British Clichés and T-shirts bearing the worst. Award ceremonies will be held to honour those who create new clichés. There would be much agreeable argument over how long а given phrase would have to survive to qualify for entry. Is it too early, for instance, to honour “moving the goalposts” or “drawing а line in the sand” or “naming and shaming” or “blue-sky thinking”?

“Road map” is а new kid on the block, which is itself а qualifier. These are all still wet behind the ears compared with, well, “wet behind the ears” or “raining cats and dogs”, which is so old it has disappeared. But most live on. We trot them out endlessly (rather than avoid them like the plague – which must be even older) and we get very angry about them. This is odd, especially given that they must have become clichés in the first place because we liked them. It is also heartening. It could be that we are merely showing off when we make а fuss about clichés (aren’t we smart to spot them?) but it could equally be that we value our language and do not like to see it diminished. We recognise that endless repetition of а cliche flogs its original meaning to death.

Business in Germany

Basic characteristics of German business culture are a monochromic attitude towards the use of time, e.g. a desire to complete one action chain before embarking on another; a strong belief that they are honest, straightforward negotiators; and a tendency to be blunt and disagree openly rather than going for politeness or diplomacy.

German companies are traditional, slow-moving entities, encumbered by manuals, systems and hierarchical parts regarded by many Europeans and Americans as over-rigid and outmoded. Hierarchy is mandatory, often resulting in exaggerated deference for one’s immediate superior and CEO.

The German boss is an extremely private person, normally sitting isolated in a large office behind a closed door. American and Scandinavian senior executives prefer an open door policy and like to wander round the corridors and chat to colleagues. This horizontal communication contrasts with the German

59

vertical system, where instructions are passed down to immediate inferiors only and kept rigidly within one’s own department.

In many countries there exists departmental rivalry, but when dealing with the Germans one should remember that they can be especially touchy in this area. Always try to find the right person for each message. Tread on a German executive’s toes and he or she will remember it for a long time.

Germans have great respect for possessions and property. Solid buildings, furniture, cars and good clothing are important for them and they will try to impress you with all these things. You should acknowledge the grandeur of German possessions and be unafraid of displaying your own solidity, facilities, etc. Germans wish to believe you are as solid as they are.

Germans have their own particular style of conducting meetings and negotiations, and you may find that procedures with big German company are much more formalized than in your country. It is generally advisable to adopt a rather more formal approach with Germans at meetings and to note a range of German characteristics to which one must react appropriately.
