Italy. When to Go.
If you want to avoid the heat and crowds, it is probably best to avoid July and August. August is when the Italians holiday, so you can be pretty sure that coastal resorts and historic cities will be particularly busy. A pleasant time to visit is April-June or September-October, although if you plan to swim, only Southern Italy may be warm enough outside the May-September period. As for the Italian winters, these are quite mild in the south, but can be even colder than at home in the north.
