Italy. Il Falconiere.

Cortona.

In a peaceful and sunlit corner of rural Tuscany, high amid vineyards and olive groves, and with sweeping views of the Val di Chianta and the ancient Etruscan town of Cortona, the friendly little Il Falconiere embodies the very essence of Italian charm and natural hospitality. Beautiful gardens with grass lawns, rosemary beds, olives, cypress trees and a horse chestnut avenue lead to the sunburnt stones of the ancient villa that dates back to 1600, and was once the home of the 19th century poet Antonio Guadagnoli. Here present-day owners Riccardo and Silvia Baracchi have lovingly restored this spendid old house into a welcoming retreat from the clamour of the modern age. A classic ‘old world’ simple style, is the hallmark of their achievement, and the original villa is the setting of nine ensuite guest rooms with cool, frescoed walls and restored original furnishings or period antiques, and such distinguished little touches as handwoven and embroidered linen. The hotel cuisine is closely supervised by Silvia Baracchi, and features traditional Tuscan dishes interposed with some delicious creations of the house - all served in the delightful two-storey restaurant with glass and wrought-iron verandah, and on the outdoor dining terrace where lemons once ripened in the sun. Breakfasts, too, are based on homemade fare, with fig and pear jam and fresh local produce. The hotel’s large cantina is composed mainly of Tuscan wines, but Silvia, who is also a professional sommelier, has added some select French and Californian labels. Il Falconiere is ideally located for exploring the Tuscan countryside and for short trips to some of central Italy’s most celebrated art cities, including Arezzo, Perugia, Siena, Florence and Assisi, all within an hour’s drive. Ideal for either a long Tuscany weekend break, or as part of a multi-centre Italy itinerary, the unique warmth and setting of Il Falconiere will certainly foster nostalgia for a gentler age! Ideal for those seeking the ‘real Italian experience’.
