Higher Education in Great Britain

The term “higher education” in Great Britain includes educational programmes, which are given to the students after 12 years of elementary and secondary schooling. The most common types of higher education establishments are colleges, universities and Polytechnics. The college is an educational institution giving special instruction in certain subjects. The university gives the highest type of education. The curriculum is wider than in colleges, and the course of studies is longer. The university is an administrative center, which arranges lectures for all the students of the colleges, holds examinations and gives degrees. University teaching combines lectures, practical classes and small group teaching either seminars or tutorials. Examinations are not necessarily held annually. At many universities there are two major examinations for the BA, or B.Sc.-the "final" exam. There is no single body or organization responsible for the planning and development of higher education as a whole in Great Britain. All the universities and colleges are independent, self-governing institutions.
