14. You have just employed a new receptionist. Explain his duties to him
When guests arrive at a hotel or call to make a booking , the hotel receptionist is often the first and the last member of the hotel staff that they speak to. So, the receptionist is responsible for presenting an image of the hotel.
I would like to emphasize that he should make sure that the guests are taken care of and are made to feel welcome during their stay.
It is important that a hotel receptionist should have a wide variety of skills to assist guests. He has to be friendly, caring and helpful; enjoy serving and assisting people with their needs.
It would be a great advantage if a hotel front desk person has excellent computer skills and is able to speak more than one language.
It is also necessary that he maintain a professional appearance by being well-dressed and neatly groomed to present a positive image.
To tell the truth there are no standards or entry requirements for becoming a receptionist. However, this job includes performing a variety of tasks like answering telephone calls, taking messages, sending faxes and emails, greeting visitors, answering questions, check in new guests and preparing bills for the guests checking out.
I would like to draw your attention to the fact that at times this job may be stressful due to interaction with various people with different types of personalities, but at the same time it is very interesting and exciting job with wide opportunities.
15. The stages of putting up a package
Today I am going to tell you about the stages of putting up a package.
First of all I want to say that package holidays, which are also known as package tours, include all of the components necessary for a complete vacation: transportation to and from the destination, hotel accommodation and transfer. In addition to the basic features, the tour package may also offer meals, entertainment, sightseeing, a rental car and many other extras.
I would like to emphasize that the professionals who bring these elements together to create a holiday are called tour operators. They buy in advance and in bulk from the principles: airlines, shipping lines, hoteliers and so on. Because they buy hundreds of seats or rooms from the principle, they pay a much lower price for them than an ordinary member of the public. The tour operator than converts this bulk into individual packages known as inclusive tours. These are marketed to the consumer through travel agents or by other systems.
As far as I know, in the past tour operators sold almost always through travel agents, but today they also use direct selling, that is more profitable because direct sell operators don’t have to pay commission to a travel agent.
In conclusion I want to say that not all tour operators sell the same type of holiday. The really big operators, the mass market operators, produce low-cost holidays to traditional sea, sun, and sand destinations like Spain, Greece, or Turkey. Other operators limit their product to customers, who want a very specific type of holiday such as adventure holidays, holidays for single people, cruise travel and so on. And according to the type of holiday vary the elements of a package.
