Birmingham is about 112 miles north-west of London. Birmingham is a city with a million inhabitants. It has grown rapidly during the last century, because of its iron and steel industry. Most of the goods manufactured in Birmingham are transported to London and distributed from there to different parts of the world. It is surrounded by typically English countryside-quiet meadows and woodland, sleepy oldworld villages, lovely castles and ancient churches.
Birmingham is well-known as an international business centre. It has developed into a modern and exciting city whose buildings and shops are wonderful.
The inhabitants of Birmingham like to sell and buy different things very much. It has been an important part of their life for more than 8 hundred years. The colourful market can be found there every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday.
A few centuries ago people came to buy or to sell old clothes, but now there is a wide choice of modern fashion for everybody. This large shopping centre is called the Bull Ring. Now it is one of the biggest open-air markets and shopping centre in the United Kingdom.
People like to come here because it has modern shops, together with atmosphere of a traditional street market.
The city's museum and art gallery has some of the finest examples of pre-Raphaelite paintings, with works by Burne-Jones and William Morris.
The Science Museum has the earliest English locomotive, which was built in 1784.
Birmingham's ultra-modern library is one of the largest In Europe. It has the Shakespeare. Memorial Library with 40..000 books in 90 languages.
There are several interesting churches and two cathedrals in Birmingham. It has more canals than Venice. The city has excellent opportunities for all kinds of sporty. It boasts 20 swimming pools, 8 golf courses and also many private clubs.
