II. Read the text.
The only big towns in Wales are along the south coast and in the nearby coal-mining volleys which run down from the southern hills. There are good castle ruins in the south.
Cardiff is the capital of Wales since 1955. It is the city on the broad Severn firth. It is both the cultural and the economic centre.
A Roman fort was founded here in the first century A.D. The character of the city was until 1147. But in 1794 the canal was built. It led into the coalmining territory of Merthyr Tyafil (the economic centre of that time). After that a big harbour and docks for shipping coal were built about 1830. The population rose.
The foundation of the national Museum of Wales in 1907 and of the Welsh University of Wales in 1893 helped Cardiff become a cultural centre.
Financially and industrially Cardiff is the most important city in Wales. Hundreds of thousands of the inhabitants of Wales live and work in this town. It rose to importance with the coal-mining and iron industries.
Cardiff is also a beautiful city. Cathay's Park is the centre of the life of the city.
Caerphilly lies a few miles to the north of Cardiff. It is known by its cheese and for its fine old Edwardian castle. Cardiff has a modern shopping centre. The valleys lie to the north of Cardiff. Those are the heart of the Welsh coal and steel industries. Choral singing is a national art.
