II.Read the text to learn more about Great Britain.
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is situated on the British Isles. The British Isles consist of two large islands: Great Britain and Ireland and of great number of small islands. The total area is over 244,100 square Kilometres.Great Britain consists of four parts: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. England is in the South of the island of Great Britain. Scotland is in the north, and Wales is in the west. Northern Ireland is situated in the north-eastern part of Ireland. The coasts of Great Britain are washed by the North Sea and the Irish Sea and are separated from Europe by the English Channel and the Strait of Dover (or Pas de Calais and La Manche).
England is mostly a lowland country. There are upland regions in the north and the south-west, but the rest of England is almost flat. There are no high mountains on these islands. The Chaviot Hills are in the north of the country. South of the Chaviot Hills you can see the Pennines. West of the Pennines you can see the Cumbrian Mountains. Ben Nevis in Scotland the highest mountain ,1s 1,343 metres high. The northern part of Scotland is called the Highlands, and the southern part is called the Lowlands. The highest mountain in Wales Is Snowdon. It is 1.085 metres high.
There are many rivers in the U.K. The longest and the deepest of them are the Thames (354 km) and the Severn (388 km). Other rivers are the Trent, the Great Ouse, the Wye and the Tyne in England and the Tay, the Clyde, the Spey and the Tweed in Scotland. There are many beautiful lakes in Britaln. Lake District in Northern England with its lakes, mountains and valleys is a favourite holiday resort. There are a lot of picturesque lakes in Scotland. In the north of Scotland there is a very famous lake Loch Ness. lt is not the largest lake in Great Britain but world-famous because of the Loch Ness monster which, as people believe lives in it. There are a lot of stories about the water monster 'Nessie".
