Glasgow with its suburbs forms the very big industrial heart of tho Lowlands. It grew from a pretty countryside into a great city. In the 17th ccntury it was a great seaport to which sugar and tobacco were imported from Africa. In the last l50 years steelwork plants and large docks and shipyards along the rivor Clyde appeared. Today Glasgow is Scotland's largest city and the third largest in population in the British Isles, after London and Birmingham, Glasgow is famous for its fine buidings, excellent shopping, beautiful parks, museums, art galleries. It attracts thousands of visitors each year from every corner of the worlds. The most popular in the city is Kelvingrove which has the country's finest collection of British pictures. Scottish painting is also well represented.
A popular place for young and old is the city’s Museum of Transport which has a lovely collection of trams, cars, model ships, early motor vehicles, pedal cycles and steam locomotives.
Glasgow is a university city. The Glasgow University was founded in 1451.
The city's nightlife has something to suit all tastes. There are 6 theatres, many cinemas, dance halls, discotheques and casinos. Glasgow also boasts Scotlands's only opera house- the Theatre Royal. It is the home of Scottish Opera and many performances by Scottish Ballet, The Scottish National Orchestra performs in Clasgow.
