Belfast is one of the youngest capital cities in the world. It has grown very fast. Today the population is 4000.000, but in the 17th century it was only a village, during the 19th century the development of industries like linen, rope-rnaking, engineering, tobacco and the sea-trade doubled the town's size every ten years. The town is also well-known for shipbuilding. The Museum and Art Gallery is rich in modern Irish paintings, a fine collection of Irish silver things. It gives a true picture of history, geology and animal life. There is a library which has early Belfast - printed books, a wonderful collection of photographs which record life half a century ago, and the Horner collection of spinning-wheels.
The Transport Museum has one of the finest collection of transport in Europe.
Botanic Gardens are one of Belfast’s oldest and most pleasant parks. Its main features are the tropical green-houses, the rosewalks and the conservatory.
The main buildings of the Queen's University of Belfast are behind the conservatory. It was opened in 1849. Belfast is a modern city, a city of the 19th century and of the industrial revolution. There are a number of public buildings which arc interesting to visit. They include the large Low Court and Protestant Cathedral.
