Verb: Mood: Conditional III

1. Read the text paying attention to the use of Conditional III; retell the text:

If John hadn't overslept, he would not have been late for work. If he had not been late for work, his boss would not have fired him. If John had not lost his job, he would not have needed money and he would not have robbed the bank. If he had not robbed the bank, the police would not have arrested him (V. Evans).

2. Put the verbs in brackets into the correct form:

  1. < They missed the train. > If you (to arrive) earlier, we (not to miss) the train (M.Vince, P. Emmerson).

  2. < She broke the window. > If she (not to break) the window, she (not to have) to pay for it (V. Evans).

3. Rephrase the sentences or combine them into one using Condition­al III:

  1. We forgot to take a map, so we got lost in the mountains (M.Vince, P. Emmerson).

  2. George's friends didn't know about his troubles. They didn't help him straightaway (M. Fuchs, M. Bonner).

  3. 3.1 missed the early train, otherwise I wouldn't have been late (V. Evans).

  10. I didn't go to bed early, so I didn't wake up at 7:00 (M.Vince, P. Em­merson).

  11. George's friends collected money for him so he didn't go to prison (M. Fuchs, M. Bonner).

  12. Mike didn't make a shopping list, and he forgot to buy some coffee (M.Vince, P. Emmerson).

  13. Clarence wasn't a first-class angel so he didn't have much self-con­fidence (M. Fuchs, M. Bonner).

  14. Poor people could buy houses because George's business lent them money (M. Fuchs, M. Bonner).

4. Complete the dialogue with the. correct form of the verbs in brackets; role play the dialogue:

  1. Mr. Simpson, you should have told me you were going away for the weekend.

  2. I (to tell) you earlier if I (to know). But I was only invited at the last minute.

  • I (not to buy) so much food if I (to know).

  1. I'm very sorry. As a matter of fact, I've got something else to tell you. I'll be leaving at the end of the week.

  2. Oh, you will, will you? You ought to give me a month's notice, you know.

  3. I'll pay you the full amount. Don't worry.

  4. I'm not worried. You, young people, are all the same. You think you can do what you want. You've all got so much money to waste.

  5. Yes. Well, I'm very sorry. But I told you at the beginning that I'd move as soon as I found a place of my own.

  6. When I was your age, I had more sense of responsibility. I (to go) to university myself if I (to have) the chance. But in my day it was more difficult.

  7. I don't see what that's got to do with it.

5. Read the text and work in pairs: one of you retell it, the other make Conditional III sentences on the pattern: If they hadn't been poor, they wouldn't have lived in a little house:

There was a family who was very poor so they lived in a little house. One day the children were hungry so the mother went to the market. On the way she crossed a bridge and saw something in the river. She leant over the bridge and her purse fell into the water. It sank to the bottom of the river so she couldn't reach it. A fish swam by and swallowed it. She had no money so she went home. There was no food in the house so the father went fishing. He caught a big fish so he had something for his wife to cook. She cut the fish open and found her purse inside with all her money still in it (V. Evans).

6. Translate the sentences into English using Conditional III:

  • Она бы пошла на работу, если бы чувствовала себя лучше.

  • Я бы не поехал в Берлин, если бы знал, что случится.

  • Я бы Вас предупредил, если бы я Вас видел на прошлой неделе.

  1. Если бы ты много занималась, ты бы сдала экзамен.

  2. Если бы она завела будильник, она бы не проспала.

  3. Если бы Вы последовали моему совету, все было бы хорошо.

  4. Если бы она не оставила рыбу на столе, кошка бы ее не съела.

  5. Тебя бы не наказали, если бы ты себя хорошо вел.

  6. Она бы приняла участие в соревнованиях, если бы ей не сделали операцию на прошлой неделе.
