The Past Perfect

Exercise 1. Read the situations and write sentences from the words in brackets as in the example.

1 . You went to Jill's house but she wasn't there, (she / go / out) She had gone out.

Exercise 2. Read the situations and write sentences ending with before. Use the verb in brackets.

1. The man sitting next to me on the plane was very nervous. It was his first flight. (fly) He had never flown before. or He hadn't flown before.

2. A woman walked into the room. She was a complete stranger to me. (see) I ___________________________________________________ before.

Exercise 3. Put the verb in brackets into the correct form, Past Perfect (I had done etc.) or past simple (I did etc.).

Exercise 4. Replace the infinitives in brackets by the Past Indefinite or the Past Perfect.

Exercise 5. Choose the right form of the verb from the brackets.

The Future Perfect

Exercise 6. Turn the following into the Future Perfect.

Exercise 7. Replace the infinitives in brackets by the Future Indefinite or the Future Perfect.

Exercise 8. Put the verb into the correct form, the Future Continuous or the Future Perfect (will be (do)ing) or (will have (done)).

1. Don't phone me between 7 and 8. We'll be having (we/have) dinner then.
