Writing

The Sprach Schule is a language school in Hamburg, Germany. Kate is a student and this is her letter to her friend Andrea about the school and her studies there.

Hanseaten Weg 13

Grumvald Hamburg

Dear Andrea,

Sorry for delay in writing. I have my hands full with studies.

The school is lovely, and I am really getting into it. There are eight students in my class, and some of them are very interesting, especially an American called Roy, he is very handsome. But he already has a girlfriend. The teachers are good, too, and I really do feel my German is progressing.

The school building isn't much to write about. There are five classrooms —four are small and warm, and one is large and cold. (Guess which one I'm in. It's not fair!). All the furniture is new but it's very ugly and all the classrooms are very untidy. There's also a language lab but apparently it's always out of order so we never go there!

It's taken me ages to type this far, so I’ll close here.

Lots of love,

Kate

P.S. My teachers are Angelika and Klaus. Angelika is an excellent teacher, but she isn't very friendly. Klaus is very patient with me, but he's boring.

Can you compare the University you study at with Kate's school?

What is different?

Our Studies

Normally, we have one or two English classes a day. We are taking phonetics, grammar, speech practice, listening comprehension and reading comprehension.

In our phonetic classes we have a lot of pronunciation practice. We are trained to imitate native speakers. Those who have a good ear for sounds and intonation learn more quickly than others. Anyway, it is rather a hard job which takes a lot of time and effort but it has to be done if you want to make progress.

In our grammar classes we practise the use of various grammar patterns, comment on the use of tense forms. We do a lot of exercises, translation and grammar tests. We also have to pass colloquis to show our results in grammar.

In our speech practice classes we do all kinds of work. We make up dialogues, talk on various situations, act out role-plays, do vocabulary tests. Regular practice helps us get a good command of the language.

In our listening comprehension classes we listen to tapes, answer the teacher's questions, discuss the texts and dialogues, write tests.

In our reading comprehension classes we read texts, do exercises, translate sentences from Russian into English.

Students sometimes complain that they are given too much work but if you plan your day well, you can manage it without much difficulty.

As far as other subjects go, the term is divided between theoretical and practical work: we have a few weeks of lectures followed by seminars. This term we are having lectures on linguistics, history and psychology. We are to take notes at the lectures and we can manage it fairly well unless the lecturer speaks too fast so that you may find it hard to follow him. Those who miss a lecture usually copy up the notes if they wish to be successful at the exam. When we have seminars, we spend a lot of time in the reading-room revising the material.

Twice a year, in January and June, we have our end-of-term exams.

The teacher first makes sure that the class have done their English homework, and she goes through the answers with them. The syllabus for this year includes practice in listening, and this week the class listens to a cassette of a policeman talking about his job. The teacher writes the hew vocabulary on the board for the students to copy down Then the students do an exercise in their workbooks.
