Mножественное число существительных (Plural forms of nouns)
Большинство имен существительных образуют множественное число путем прибавления к форме единственного числа окончания –s, которое после звонких согласных произносится [z], а после глухих [s]. В существительных, оканчивающихся на свистящий или шипящий звук окончание множ. числа выступает в форме –es и произносится [iz]. Ряд английских существительных образуют форму множественного числа другими способами: man-men, foot-feet, tooth-teeth, child-children и др.
Ex. 1. Read the following nouns, paying attention to the ending of the plural form:
Pens, sets, beds, tips, bees, pits, lips, lies, bibs, nets, seeds, tests, lids.
Ex. 2. Give plural of the following nouns:
A film, a tie, a plan, a pencil, a face, a pen, a cap, an apple, a match, a bag, a dish, a dog, a wife, a city, a car, a letter, a sister, a box, a knife, a leaf, a lady, a shelf, a man, a woman, a child, a tooth.
Ex. 3. Put the nouns into plural form and do all the necessary changes:
1. Bob has a fine dog. 2. I see a man and a woman there. 3. There is a match in the box. 4. Miss Hopkins teaches my child French. 5. They need a new mini-bus. 6. He has a sister and a brother. 7. Alice, will you bring a fork and a knife from the kitchen? 8. I like your father’s story. 9. Eve has a good friend at school. 10. Please, give me a book on art (искусство). 11. The map is on the shelf.
Ex. 4. Translate into English:
Семь кроватей, девять ручек, красные галстуки (tie), восемь детей, пять яблок, три сестры, прекрасные фильмы, мои книги, новые автомашины, зеленые парки, старые газеты, черные карандаши, стальные (steel) ножи, мужчины и женщины, преподаватели и студенты, девять страниц, семь человек, девять столов, шесть дней, два текста, много книг, мало газет, много яблок, мало уроков, много людей.
Present Continuous Tense
Обозначает действие в процессе его развития, совершающееся в настоящий момент. Состоит из вспомогательного глагола to be и причастия I смыслового глагола (так называемой –ing формы).
Ex. 1. Make questions and answer them in the negative.
1. The man is waiting for you. 2. The children are playing in the garden. 3. The people are hurrying to the stadium to see the football match. 4. He is coming to the University later today. 5. They are arriving in Moscow tomorrow. 6. You are going to the cafeteria. 7. Mary is doing her lessons now. 8. his parents are leaving next week. 9. The students of group Five are writing a test. 10. The family are having dinner now. 11. Mr. Black is speaking over the telephone now.
Ex. 2. Change the sentences as in the model:
Model: She is reading now (to write a letter).
She is not reading. She is writing a letter.
1. Helen is skating now (to ski). 2. They are playing chess (checkers – шашки). 3. The students are going home (to the library). 4. Mother is making dinner (to wash dishes in the kitchen). 5. Father is working in the garden (to take a rest). 6. Ann and John are swimming there (to lie in the sun). 7. I am asking you questions (to answer your questions). 8. Student Popov is sitting at his desk (to stand at the blackboard). 9. She is learning new words (to recite a poem). 10. We are having a meeting (to have an English class).
Ex. 3. Put the verb into correct form:
‘You are working hard today.’ ‘Yes, I have a lot to do.’ (to work)
I … Christine. Do you know where she is? (to look for)
‘Are you ready, Ann?’ ‘Yes, I …’ (to come)
You … a lot of noise. Could you be quieter? (to make)
