Fortification
To ensure correct understanding of the fortress type and its level, it is advisable to say some words about fortification. The bastion type of fortress was born in Italy in the XVI century and, was widespread in the XVIII century. This system came into existence as a result of the development of artillery and was occupying a more and more prominent place for warfare. Since ancient times the fortification structures had walls as high as possible in order to prevent climbing them over. Later towers were added to the walls. These towers were usually distributed at a considerable distance, but of course not farther than a double distance of a bow shot, because the purpose of introducing them was to flank the curtains, as the part of the wall between two towers was called. First the towers were square afterwards mostly round. But the round shape proved inconvenient, when the necessity of placing cannons on the towers broadened and lowered them turning them into rondelli. They had become so broad that in front of the rondelli there remained some space, which could not be covered with fire (fig.2). Here the enemies, once having reached the wall, could be safe unless something was dropped on their heads. That fact led to a change in the shape of the structures, trine forming them into bastions (fig.3). The first bastions were comparatively small; they grew in size with the development of the system.
It reached perfection in France during the reign of Louis XIV owing to the activity of a military engineer Vauban (1633-1707) who later became a marshal of France. The system proved effective nearly all the rest of the time of smooth bore artillery with its short range, as it provided a safe enough near defense. The main elements of the bastion system and its functioning can be seen in the scheme (fig. 4).
Thus the fortification system of the designed stronghold was quite up to date at its time.
