Methodical recommendations

to independent work of students

Course “History of the State and Law of Ukraine” foresees time for independent work of students. This form of education foresees deepening of students’ knowledge of main themes of the course, and independent study of some problems and questions according to the program of the course. Tasks for independent work can be given during seminars and consultations.

In the framework of the course “History of the State and Law of Ukraine” students’ independent work includes:

  • study of scientific monographs and articles, investigating which problems of the course;

  • work with lectures and memoires of well-known political and public workers of different historical periods;

  • studying of literature about life and work of well-known political and public workers;

  • work with publications in the periodic press and special magazines;

  • work with special inquiry literature;

  • work with library catalogues;

  • summarizing of studied material;

  • preparing of reports and lectures.

Working with documental sources, students learn to characterize these sources, analyze their materials according to historical and political conditions of the origin of these sources.

Summarizing recommended literature, students work with the most importants sources and scientific works, and acquire categorial apparatus. Summarizing can be realized in forms of giving an account of the text, extended plan, or summarizing of quotations.

Working with special inquiry literature (dictionaries and reference books), students learn to find needed materials, compare definitions, pay attention to contents of scientific discussion. Students must pay attention to the time of publishing of concrete book, to main tendencies in determination of categories, to completeness of description of concrete phenomenon, etc. They also must be able to find general materials about concrete countries, regions, and historical epochs.

Students must also pay attention to work with new sources in libraries, their catalogues, with inquiry informations about new editions in the press and specialized magazines.

Working with information of the periodical press (especially with such journals as «Український історичний журнал», «Політика і час», «Політична думка», «Памятки України» etc.), students learn to distinguish tendency in giving information, compare this tendency with national interests, determine level of objectiveness of this information.

Tasks for independent work also foresee making of students’ reports. It may be the analysis of a concrete book, article, publication, or group of publications. Working on the report, students must carefully analyze preface of the book, conclusions of individual chapters, general conclusions. They must also compare their own conclusions with these analyzed conclusions. It will help to learn to formulate student’s own opinion about the reported book or article.

Working on the report, student must keep to these conditions: 10 – 15 pages; paper size – A4; font: Times New Roman; font dimensions – 14; interval between lines – 1,5. The report must contain a title page, plan, preface, main part, conclusion, and a list of used sources and literature. It must also contain author’s conclusion about the described problem.
