OF UKRAINE
The aim and tasks of the course
The aim of the course “History of the State and Law of Ukraine” is to raise students’ awareness of the history of Ukrainian state, its national traditions and forms, evolution of Ukrainian political and legislative system, and European context of this evolution.
The course “History of the State and Law of Ukraine” seeks to:

increase general culture level of students;
-
help future specialists of international relations in appraising of basic political processes in Ukraine from ancient times to modern period;
-
enlarge students’ experience of comparative analysis of political and law development of Ukraine during different historical epochs.

As a result of studying the course, students must know:

main general and individual tendencies of political and law development of Ukraine during different historical epochs;

main periods and stages of political and law evolution of Ukrainian state and people;
-
main achievements of Ukrainian people in the branch of state and law building from ancient times to modern period.

Students must be able:

to analyze main political and law phenomena, processes, and tendencies in historical development of Ukraine during different historical epochs;

assess political and law phenomena and processes in Ukraine from ancient times to modern period objectively;

find general conformities of formation and development of Ukrainian state and law during different historical epochs.
PROGRAM OF THE COURSE
Themes of lectures
Theme 1.
ORIGIN OF THE STATE AND LAW
ON UKRAINIAN TERRITORY
Antes and their state in 4th – 7th centuries: documental sources and modern conceptions. Slavic tribes in Ukrainian’s territory. Origin of early Kyivan state (Polyans and foundation of Kyiv by Prince Kyi). Political and administrative order of early Kyivan state. Acitivity of Princes Askold and Dir (9th century). Foreign affairs of early Kyivan state. Dynastical coup d’etat of 882 and beginning of Ruryk’s dynasty ruling.
Theme 2.
Political and law order of kyivan state in 9th – 10th centuries
Political and legal development of Kyivan state during 10th century. Ruling of Prince Oleg, Prince Igor Rurykovych, Princess Olga, and Prince Svyatostav Igorevych. First international treaties of Kyivan state (treaties with Byzantium from 907, 911, 944, and 971), relationships with Byzantium, Bulgaria, Sacred Roman Empire, and other states. Essention of Kyiv’s power to territories of other Slavic tribes. Improvement of tax and legislative systems.

Political and law order of kyivan state in 10th – 11th centuries
Political activity of Prince Volodymyr the Great and Prince Yaroslav the Wise. Establishment of Christianity in 988 – 990 and its historical role. Foreign policy of Kyivan state during 10th – 11th centuries: “dynastical marriages”, international treaties, etc. First attempts of law codification in Kyivan state: church statutes of Volodymyr the Great, “The Ruthenian Law”. “The Ruthenian Law” as an artefact of political and legal relations in Kyivan state.
