Присвійний відмінок іменників.

Іменники в англійській мові мають лише два відмінки: загальний Victor, father і присвійний, або родовий Victor’s school, father’s work. Присвійний відмінок виражає належність і таким чином відповідає в українській мові родовому відмінку of, наприклад a school of Victor, a work of father.

Присвійний відмінок іменників утворюється додаванням апострофа та букви s (-‘s) до форми однини іменника в загальному відмінку та апострофа (-‘) до форми множини іменника, а інколи й до форми однини із закінченням -s або -x (крім іменника child-children, child’s-children’s).

A girl+’s=a girl’s hat (капелюх дівчинки, тобто капелюх, який належить дівчині).

Victor+’s=Victor’s book (книга Віктора, або Вікторова книга).

Girls+’s=girls’ hats (капелюхи дівчат).

У деяких випадках присвійний відмінок може утворюватися або за допомогою-‘s або -‘. Наприклад: James’s car або James’car (автомобіль Джеймса).

Закінчення -‘s вимовляється за тими ж правилами, що й закінчення -s у множині іменників.

Коли вживається? Переважно коли перший іменник є:

1. назва істоти: a boy’s name (ім’я хлопчика), a cat’s tail (хвіст кота).

2. назва організації, країни, міста, позначення часу:

a company’s success (успіх компанії), Ukraine’s population (населення України), London’s theatres (театри Лондона), Sunday’s newspaper (недільна газета).

Exercise 1. Join the two sentences. Show possession with 's or s' or of. Add "the" if necessary.

Model: a) Our car has a boot. All our suitcases are there.

All our suitcases are in the boot of our car.

b) Mary has a new coat. It is certainly very beautiful.

Mary's new coat is certainly very beautiful.

Exercise 2. Answer the following questions. Use the nouns suggested in the possessive case.
