Вправа 1.З’ясуйте значення наступних реалій; розкажіть все, що ви знаєте про відповідні поняття:

III. Вправи на переклад.

1. Поради перекладачу.

1.1. Вказівний займенник „this” в словосполученні „thiscountry” перекладається як „наша країна”, а не „ця країна”.

1.2. “Virtual”– досить нелегке слово для перекладу, тому що в українську мову увійшло поняття “віртуальній”. Більшість словників дають такі еквіваленти як “фактичний” та “практичний”, що мають різні контекстуальні відтінки значення. Український еквівалент “практичний” ближче до англійського “virtual”.

1.3. Особливо важливо пам’ятати відмінності між британським та американським варіантами англійської мови антонімічного характеру, коли одне й те ж слово означає у британців та американців протилежні речі. Наприклад, “public school” в Британії – державна школа, тобто школа для всіх; британський політик, який виставив свою кандидатуру на вибори – “stands”, в той час як американський “runs”.

2. Вправи на аналіз перекладацьких рішень.

Вправа 1.Вкажіть перекладацькі трансформації, які були використані для передачі змісту наступних речень:

Вправа 2.Проаналізуйте 4 варіанта перекладу назви іншої статті цього ж автора „Blair’s foreign country”:

- Наша країна чужа Блеру.

- Інше бачення Британії Блером.

- Блер i чужа йому Британія.

- Блер i його зовсім інша Британія.

Вправа 3.Відредагуйте виконаний переклад фрагмента статті. Вкажіть, чим викликані недоліки запропонованого перекладу.

Як би не хотілося прем’єр-міністру реформувати Британію по-своєму, більшість іноземців вперто протистоять його реформам. Як показують результати дослідження Британської Ради, всі в світі ідентифікують цю країну з її традиціями.

Текст 1. Savile Row's tailors prepare to battle with Abercrombie&Fitch

Tailors of London's Savile Row argue that the arrival of Abercrombie & Fitch's planned kid's store will damage the integrity of the street, making it a less desirable destination for their customers.

Mark Henderson, the chairman of heritage tailors of the professional non-profit organisation Savile Row Bespoke, has spoken on behalf of the famous street's many tailors: "Savile Row is a terribly famous address, associated with the world's best tailoring," he told the Evening Standard. "Putting in a children's store to sell jeans and T-shirts seriously damages the integrity of the street. The other aspect to this is this narrow, quiet street will be flooded with crowds of people inside, crowds of people outside. That means it will make it less pleasant for our customers, whom we have built up over 200 years, to come to Savile Row."

Текст 3. Prince William will spend Christmas NOT with the Queen

Prince William is to break royal tradition and spend ­Christmas Day with wife Kate Middleton’s family instead of with the Queen. The decision, announced yesterday by Clarence House, was taken with the approval of Her Majesty and Prince Philip. It will be the first time that William has not spent Christmas Day with the Queen. The source explained: “It seems they are breaking with tradition to do the modern thing and spend time with both families rather than ­favor one over the other. It is certainly a brave decision by ­William.”

The Duchess of Cambridge’s visit to her ­family comes after a difficult few weeks. She was forced to announce her pregnancy earlier than planned when she went into hospital three weeks ago. She spent three days being treated at London’s King Edward VII Hospital for severe morning sickness.

Meanwhile Prince ­Harry, 28, a captain in the Army Air Corps, will spend his second Christmas in five years in Afghanistan where he has volunteered to dish up lunch to ­soldiers in line with an Army ­tradition which calls for officers to serve the lower ranks.

“Although the Queen will miss William and Kate, it is Harry that she will really be concerned about. Her thoughts and prayers will be with him, as well as other service personnel who are over in Afghanistan”- a royal source said.

Текст 3. Dress code

What do such mysterious abbreviations as Cb, Ct, A5 and other letters written at the bottom of an invitation to a party or reception mean? In fact they represent a special code that notifies guests in advance about the required form of attire.

The most formal dress code known as ‘White tie’ can be seen on VIP invitations. Such occasions like the Oscar Awards or Nobel Prize ceremony, balls in royal places require coattail (frock coat) for men accompanied by a white vest, a white bow-tie. Women wear long, evening dresses, stockings, long gloves and authentic jewelry and expensive fur tippets.

A tuxedo is more widespread for a formal dress code. It is an open black jacket with full-length satin lapels. For weddings, anniversaries, and national holidays one should dress according to a dress code entitled Formal, where men wear a classical suit that is dark blue, dark grey of a single color accompanied by a white shirt and a silk tie.

For events earlier than 7 p.m., men can put on a light-colored suit and women can wear cocktail dresses. If the words Semi-formal are written in the invitation, this means that colors can be different, moreover, for an informal party one can wear a jacket over a knitted jumper. There are also other abbreviations like Ct (casual travel), which means dressing casually and A5 (after 5 p.m.).
