5. Paraphrase the sentences so that to express an unreal wish:

Model: I didn’t visit the British Museum last time. – Oh, if I had visited the British Museum last time.

I can’t ski. –Oh, if I could ski.

1. I didn’t make note of the departure time of the plane. 2. You are so untactful! 3. Luke forgot to turn off the water heater when he left. 4. Don’t interrupt me when I’m trying to make a point! 5. You reacted so rudely to Mary’s comment at the meeting. 6. I wonder if Harriet will join us on the excursion this weekend. 7. You don’t pay attention to what I’m saying! 8. I didn’t (couldn’t) buy tickets for “Donbass Arena” opening ceremony. 9. She didn’t tell me she was going away. 10. I can’t read his mind. I don’t know what he is thinking about.

6. Use the forms of the Subjunctive II translating the following simple sentences of exclamatory type into English.

Model: a) Oh, if I had money now!

b) Oh, if only I had known it then!

Note: If an unreal action expressed by the subjunctive form refers to the future, “would + infinitive” or “could + infinitive” is used, e. g.: Oh, if you would (could) come tomorrow again!

7. Say that you would do the same but something prevents you from doing it.

Model: She is going to book for an office job. – I’d look for it too but I cannot type.

Mary went to the country for the weekend. – I’d have gone there too but I was sick.

8. Rearrange the following sentences saying that things could be (could have been) different. Begin your sentences with “But for”.

Model: He went to the pub and was late for work. – But for the pub (But for his going to the pub) he wouldn’t have been late for work (he could have got to work in time).

1. He was an experienced driver and he gave us good advice. 2. We didn’t reach the village because it began to rain. 3. It’s a pity I was so busy and couldn’t make a call. 4. I don’t study Italian as I have no spare time. 5. The patient was sorry he hadn’t consulted the doctor in time. 6. I have matchstick legs and I can’t wear short dresses. 7. I can’t buy this leather bag because it is too expensive. 8. It often rained and I couldn’t take many photos. 9. Nancy is a bit too old that’s why she can’t find a job. 10. I feel unhappy because I live far from my relatives. 11. The price of petrol rose and I sold the car. 12. I left the office late and didn’t catch my usual train.
